Coil pack question
Coil pack question
Hmm.. Maybe I have been misinformed all these times but I have always refered to the coil pack on my truck as the little thing that sits ontop of my engine and has the 6 plug connectors coming from it... I have seen multiple posts on here that say replacing all 6 coils is like 1000+ dollars... I was on rock auto and saw its 45 plus shipping to my house. I am sort of new to this part of the truck so I might be a little off. If you guys could clarify that would be a great help... Thanks
I got on to this by thinking my cop is going bad as I have a slight hesitation off accel and was going to replace it... its 45 bucks so who cares right?
I just did plugs and wires as reg maintenance too... Hesitation was there before and still is
(this is what i thought it was... Similar looking to this)

Sounds like he has a 4.6 or 4.2 if he was able to change wires.
OP what engine do you have? would make things easier
If he has a 4.2 he is right about one coil pack(i had one of those in my last truck)
I think the 4.6 has a similar design but im not positive(never had one, sorry)

My 97 4.6 has 2 coil packs. The 4.6 didn't get cops until 1999 or 2000. The 5.4's always had cops.

Absolutely so, since the 4six didn't evolve until 2000. Unless someone removed the 5four in that truck and replaced it with a 4six. Otherwise, nope! Not possible.
mabey a previose owner did a engine swap to the newer 4.6, wiring, pcm, and all?
I could see someone swapping the engine harness to the COP setup, but not the ECM
Ok shesh some of ya'll are t-bags around here...... So maybe I was wrong. Damn. Chill out.
It most definitely had the 4.6L V8. So I guess I Was mistaken about the COP's.

Right. It would have had to of been a 5four originally. A 4six WOULD swap right in and you would use the 5fours COP set up because the coil drivers are already there. The 5four drivers will work the 4six engine.
However, the 4six may not run as well it could using the 5four tune. Well enough I guess.
The easiest thing to do with a V8 swap is to use which ever coil system that's pre-existing. It makes more sense, since changing/converting to another ignition set up is more involved. It can be done, if need be or yea, IF you need or want to use a newer harness. Other than that, there's no advantage as either ignition system will work just fine.
A lot of 4six to 5four swaps utilize the 4six coil packs vs doing the work it takes to convert to a COP system.

T-bags, what do you mean? Who needs chillin? Who's being a d1ck about anything? Looks like your covering those yourself for some reason? No need. Correct info shouldn't hurt that bad. Everyone else has posted such, so....
