loud noise coming from air filter area
loud noise coming from air filter area
my 98 with the 4.6 makes a very loud humming type noise once in a while.. it seems like its come from my air filter ( i have a cold air intake ) and when it starts making the noise the rpms start to alternate from 500-1000-1200 and then back down at idle.. i would like to know what this and would appreciate any help. thanks

Sound like a sticky IAC. It can be removed and cleaned properly.
Or you could have a vacuum leak somewhere in the intake system. Should be accompanied by a fault code (CEL) but if it has just started appearing, may not be detected yet.
Take a peak around the whole intake system. Go over every hose connection and inspect every hose with a fine eye. Even a pin hole can make noise. Removing the IAC and cleaning it only takes about 30 minutes and is a fairly easy procedure. Consider it maintenance and just bump it off the list.
Ooo, that's right, you have an aftermarket intake. Which intake? Still, go over all areas and look for obstructions, air leaks, pinched hoses etc.. Also, make sure that cone filter is not deteriorating and falling apart.

Just follow the intake tube to the throttle body, should be right on top right above the butterfly plate on the t/b. 2-10 mm bolts and an electrical plug.
Look in the DIY's, there is a write up. Might want to go 1 step farther and clean the T/B and EGR ports. The 4.6's like to plug them up.
BTW Toyz nailed it, I'm sure.
Good luck
