Need tire advice/help!

Hey Guys,

I have a 1998 4.6L XLT 2wd as my 2nd vehicle. I bought it used and it needs tires. I dont use it alot so i dont want to spend 500+ on new tires so I have been searching Craiglist for a decent set. I know stock is 235-255/70/16. The truck currently has 275/70/16s and feels good with no rub. So i came across a pretty good deal on 4 tires but they are 265/50/16s. I am not sure about the lower profile, affect on speedometer, and look. Any thoughts? Here are the tires Im looking at....

http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/pts/3444387410.html

Thanks in advance

Check out this page. The difference in the tires you're looking at and the stock size (and especially the size you're using currently) is huge! I don't think those tires are very well suited to a truck and would look a little silly on one. Looks like they're better suited for a cute ute or something...

Thanks for the advice. That was a very good read with some useful tools as well. So after reading that it seems to me like a 265/60-70/16 would be a much better (closer) fit to the stock size as wellas my current size.

I looked around, and BFG does not make tires in that size, at least anymore. I would wonder how long they have been sitting around and whether they are dry rotted. If I were you I would look for 265/70R16 or 265/75R16. There are many tires that come in that size.

also check the dot date on the tire. That will tell you how old they are. That is a pretty low profile.

The Car Bible site suggests that a tire older than 6 years should be avoided. I take this with a grain of salt. There are plenty of vintage cars driving around with original tires, industrial equipment that is 30-40+ years old with original tires, etc. The 10-ply tires I have on my truck are about 6-7 years old now and you'd never know it.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I'm gonna pass on those tires and look for something in the 255 to 275 range with a ratio close to 70.
