could really use help with diagnosis, heres my symptoms

1999 f150, 5.4, 4r70w, 4x4
-one code, p0705, trans range sensor malfunction
-no drive or OD
-overdrive on (stalk switch) and engine just revs up
-overdrive off (stalk switch) and wont shift out of 2nd
-no reverse lights
-when od was working, had intermittent tranny slap upon kickdown or going into passing gear (you choose preferred terminology)
-ive pulled the valve body and checked for the dreaded broken snap ring, (not really dreaded in this situation) I was honestly hoping for something that simple. also cleaned the valve body.
-ive cleaned the TRS and adjusted it to its marked neutral position
after doing these few things I still have no drive or overdrive. I know I should test the switches and sensors but I have no idea how, im embarrassed to say. I have a analog multimeter and some idea on how to use it but as far as knowing the settings and what each specific sensor is supposed to measure... count me out. LOST! well friends, there it is. any help would be much appreciated. thanks in advance.

If you want to diagnose it, you'll need more test equipment and knowledge or take it to someone who can do it for you.

If you want to throw a part at it first, replace the TRS since, if the computer can't figure out what gear it's supposed to be, it won't be able to properly command the correct gears.

I agree, in addition if you have no revese lights, the circuit comes through the """"DTR"""".
Change it first. The PCM is telling you it has a problem from the code you have.
The D in the sensor designation means digital.
The sensor has to tell the PCM what gear you select by a 1 out of 3 digital selection code so it selects the correct solenoid to open after the EPC is opened. this why there are so many leads involved back to the transmission plugup.
After this you may still have some other issue so you can't tell what you have if two issues are present at the same time..
Good luck.

apologies for the late reply.

-I replaced and adjusted the TRS and as I suspected, got my reverse lights back but not my high gears.
-after all the time and work I peaked out on my tranny knowledge and got her to someone who can do more.
-im preparing myself for a rebuild/replace... sadface...
-I do really appreciate you fellas for the advice and knowledge. hope to talk to you soon. maybe on a happier note next time. take care.
