Hey, if you are getting 14MPG around town, I would be happy with that! I have the 5.4L and I get a best of 12.8MPG in town and have gotten as high as 17MPG on a trip out of town not long ago! I could probably get better, but I am pretty heavy on the throttle and like most of the posts say, it is a truck!

I see l9
as for maintenance, my brother is very particular, everything done by the book. But he hasn't done anything extra, i.e. throttle body cleaning, etc...as for odo, not checked but plan to towards the end of the month on a 8 hrs drive. There's right around 160k miles on her

As I said before, I'm not worried about my gas mileage but rather, I want to make sure it's where it should be.

19? Those are 3.55's.

My son in law has a 98 Scab 4wd with 4.6 auto 3.55's with 170k on it. When he got it he was getting 15 commuting - half city streets (35-45 mph) and half 70 mph expressway. Best he ever saw was 17, that was on a trip at 65 mph. Straight city driving was around 12.

His EGR passages are plugged up now and it's throwing a P0401. Now he gets 12 if he commutes. He doesn't commute with it any more, his wife got a new SUV and he's using her old minivan that gets about 21 commuting. The truck is basically only making Home Depot and dump runs now.

So - with those conditions, 14 isn't bad with those tires. You may be able to improve it a bit with fresh spark plugs and a throttle body and MAF cleaning. Throw a bottle of Techron in the gas.

Sounds great, I did just add seafoam in the fuel tank and I have oil and plugs to change. As I see, I'm pretty much in line with most of the people on here.
Thanks

I believe the compressor spins even without the AC running, so enjoy what you've got. It's certainly not like the 94 Ranger I had where I could press the **** and turn off the compressor function.

Anyway, OP, don' sweat MPGs now. Winter fuel blends are kicking in, I bet.

Vehicle in the signature.

12 MPG "around town"
15-16 MPG Highway under 70 MPH
13.5 MPG mixed
9.5-9.7 MPG when going from NNJ to FLA back in October. Towing the trailer.

Quite frankly, OP you own a truck. If you need gas mileage find a Ranger with a 4 cyl or mid size car.
As I said before, I'm not worried about my gas mileage but rather, I want to make sure it's where it should be. Reading all posts does help. You could have giving your 2 fingers a break from typing your last statement

BTW, thanks for the other info, good to know

Yes and no.

If you have the **** on off. The compressor does not spin.

Have it on anything else it spins

Use only MOTORCRAFT plugs, do not use antiseize, and torque them to 28 ft/lb to prevent loosening and blowout. Those heads only have 4 threads and this was an issue. use dielectric grease in the coil boots. Use 5W20 oil (Motorcraft preferred) and a good filter (again, Motorcraft preferred, but NEVER a Fram filter).

Yes, I heard good things about Mobil 1. But oil is a scary subject to discuss in forums; it can turn into a heated discussion quick
