The rear end is toast... Same thing happened to me once. Lost the breather hose on the rear axle and it filled w/swamp water after a trip thru Mud Lake. Bad thing about that, -I was 1200 miles from home, in the Sunshine State when it went bang. I was bummed. That was with a 90 Ford w/18.5x44" Ground Hawgs on it lol.

EDIT: You can blame everything on the phone. If you want. (;

jrew do you think its just somthing in the ring and pinion or pssibly an axlr shaft? how expensive is it usally? do you think th 8.8 rear end is to weak for those heavy tires and wide rims? any suggestions to fix this problem correctly would be greatly appricated. can i do a 9.75 swap and still use my drive shaft? im done playing and fixing it the right way once and for all.

A driveshaft shop can do one up right for you, especially if you bring both shafts in.

If the parts truck has a 5.4, it has a 9.75.

jrew? That's enough of that Blue-02-NOwd...

Like str8t six said, take a look. If your real lucky, it COULD be as simple as putting it back together. Yes they can and have just fallin apart before. Its rare. You will probably be surprised just what is holding that axle and everything together in there.

Nope, the 8.8 is plenty strong and you would need a new drive shaft if you went with the 9.75.

yea, take a look in the differential. we had a derby car with the 8.8 we blew it out in a round and were done for the night. (we welded the spider gears together for traction. ) sounds like something to do with the ring and pinion to me.

I had an 8.8 apart recently and have been informed in the past. So I'll elaborate a little. -If that pinion shaft lock bolt loosens up enough, you COULD loose a U washer when you get the vehicle it in a certain predicament ie angle/pressure. That's a one time bolt and your suppose to trash it and replace with new whenever removed for any reason.

However, you can re-use that one with a little know how. The problem comes when axle seals are replaced. You have to remove the bolt to pull the axle and most of the time, the same bolt is used again. Without the RIGHT thread locker (NOT Permatex) properly applied that bolt can eventually work its way back out.

Have you ever seen bolts that come with thread locker already applied to them ? It usually an Orange color, but there's Blue as well. That's a Loctite product that's hard to find, I believe its #549 ? The product is used in the industry because with it, you can torque to any spec and the bolt will forever retain its value.

if you ever think you are going to go forced induction again, i would just swap in a 9.75"

dont you have new gears on your truck now?

IF..I were you, the next thing I would do is remove the rear brake discs to see if the emg brakes have come apart and binding the parts between the inner drum and the backing plate.
It might show if you jack up the rear and in neutral, try to turn the wheel backward and foward.
If limited slip rear, the side not jambing will slip the internal clutch on that axle if you put enough pressure on a lug or ''bar' it between two lugs.
One way they may turn, the otherway they may jamb. That is the sure sign of the brakes coming apart on one or both sides, besides the noise it might make..
All the hardware is available as well as the shoes.
If they have never been off for a long time you would be surprised at what you might find.
When they come apart there is nowhere for peices to go but jamb up.
I would do this before tearing any more apart.
Hope that's all it is.
Good luck.
