Head Gasket replacement how to?

I've been looking for a good how to with pictures on how to do a head gasket replacement, so far I'm not seeing anything decent. A few 10 step guides without pictures, chiltons is just bad and incomplete. Any pointers ?

97 4.6L f150, 215k miles.

Or does the guy who has never done a gasket replacement need to create one?

Note, I still need to verify it does indeed need one, but I suspect so. Loosing a quart+ of oil every 1k miles and my coolant is turning darker.

Try this:

But it may not be exact for your truck.

That is a great guide. Anyone know if there is one for the 5.4? 5.4 DOHC?

The 4.6 and the 5.4 are so simliar that if you are mechanically inclined enough to fix a blown head gasket, you should be able to use that guide and still fix it on a 5.4.

I blew mine (5.4). Me and a friend tore into it without any guides or pointers. We replaced a lot of parts while the whole thing was apart like pulleys, water pump, exhaust manifolds with headers, serpentine belt, coolant hoses, coolant tank, thermostat all gaskets, timing chain tensioners and guides. i know im forgetting some stuff too. It wasnt really all that bad as long as you have the time, place, tools, and patience to do it. I was very happy with the outcome knowing exactly what the inside of my engine looked like and that it was good to go for at least another 100k without any serious repairs. Good luck!!

Thanks. With the 4.6 guide, shop manual and some youtube videos, I think I should be fine. That guide was nice because it would eliminated a lot of thinking and that is where I make my mistakes . I'm going to have to get started now so that I don't waste my Christmas break
