pulling questions

I decided I am gonna pull my truck next Saturday and have a couple questions. We're using a typical transfer sled. How do you recommend I pull? 4x4High? 4x4Low? Stay in 1st? Its gonna be my first pull too so give me some tips. lol, thanks.

I was wanting to do this at our county fair but the fear of breaking my daily driver was enough not to, at least not this year. I was told to use 4 low and keep it in first and just go fairly slow with it and it would pull fine. Maybe next year for me.

4x4 low range 1st gear would never get enough speed to carry you further. That sled would be on your butt before you made it 20 feet at that speed. I've never done it, but I would guess 4x4H....1st gear? I duno. 4low just seems way to slow. It's a combination of power and speed that will travel you the furthest.
I think I would have the same concerns as 4x4wolf... somethings going to break.

You pulling it with the 4.6 and 3.55's?

Probably not the same thing, but I tried to pull out some bush stumps that had a pretty good root ball with my F150. Tried 2wd.. Stump won. Switched to 4h. Stump won again. 4L. F150 won! Got the rest out on the first try too.

Not sure what you should do with the 5 speed.. I'd say 4L for sure, but you might have to pick a gear like 2nd or even 3rd and start in that and just let it rev to the limit and see how far you go.

If you get multiple runs, you can try different things, but take some video whatever you do!

Good luck!

Mitch

seems like 20mph is a good speed to get to. so try different setups before you get there. i would think 1st gear in 4HI would get you up to that speed.

Same here, well sort of. Was cutting in small one lane roads into the woods with a 100' turn around at the end (hunting/recreation). I had gravel trains hauling material (21aa spec gravel) to me. The trains are about 56,000 - 60,000 lbs loaded and this particular road was on about a 8% grade down hill. Had just one more load coming for the day so I sent the dozer away to start cutting in the next. I new the train driver, he was good at spreading the material over the draw bar without having to disconnect the trailer.

Anyway lol, driver arrived, I dumped him, -Perfect! Except! It was fresh material and it wasn't packed yet. The train now empty would begin to lose traction about 20' from the top and start hopping. After a couple attempts I hooked up to him. Can't recall what they weight empty, - 20,000 - 30,000 lbs I expect.

4H 1rst, -denied. She wouldn't move it, I didn't have the power. The train had all that, -a 550 horse cat. Just no traction.

4L, - it took everything. The front wheels would dig a bit then find harder ground. The 150 was hopping as well while digging those ruts. I never let off, the truck would slow close to a stop on a few occasions while digging a little deeper down, -more than once but kept moving until finally succeeding.

The F150 got quite a bit more respect after that day. Would have been a great commercial lol.

Anyway, I still had to send the dozer back to that one. As we made quite the mess.

Pulling a weight sled, 4 low has more than enough speed. They will have the weight transfer moving slowly on the sled vs say one rigged for a tractor pull. Still, -4H won't get you far,- if it will even move it. They are heavy as hell to begin with.

I was hired at allot of those events, well,- dome events anyway. From building/maintaining moto/supercross tracks - pulls. Anything where they needed to import/export dirt lol. It was a blast.

Is your truck an auto or manual? 4 Low/High will depend on track conditions. If the track is wet and tacky, you will want 4 low. If it's dry and loose, you can probably get away with 4 High to get some wheel speed. You can probably use 2nd and stay in that. My buddy has a 6.4 Powerstroke that he pulls with on occasion. I know when it's wet, he'll start in 4 Low in 4th gear...although his truck is built for pulling.

When I do it, I go 2nd gear 4 low. Goal is about a 25 mph speed. Regular A/T tires best. They clean out well and aren't too aggressive to break parts from too hard of a bite at the end. Keep weight in the box at a minimum. I aways remove my spare.

Alright thanks man. I do have a/t's but they're real beat. all my friends say m/t's suck because when they bite stuff starts exploding which seems to be true from watching pulls at our town fair.

Let us know how you do. My best was 279.6 in the 6200 lb class totally stock. I am getting set for next year with my new supercharger and current set up.

I can almost guarantee that you will break the input shaft on that M5OD. Don't do it.
