2000 F150 intermittent starting for a year, now won't start at all

I have a 2000 ford F150, 4.6 V8. For over a year, from time to time, it would not re-start if I shut it off and tried to restart after a short time, such as going in for takeout, or a even a gas fill up.

More recently, If it was hot out, it would not start. It always started in the night, regardless, including if I had made a short stop.

I recently replaced the Fuel pump relay in spot 301.
For 3 weeks, I never had a problem, including after multiple stops.

Yesterday, After a 3rd stop, it did not want to start. I pulled out a can of starter fluid, sprayed in past the air filter, and it started. But then, when merging on the highway, the engine cut off.

It has not started since, including at midnight.
Today, I replaced the fuel filter.

Nothing. If I spray starter fluid, It will start, and as long as I continue spraying the starter fluid in, it keeps running.

Does anyone know how to resolve this/what my problem is? A new fuel pump install is going to be $550.

IF that will fix it, then I have to do it. I had this truck with a local mechanic for over a week last year, he could not uncover the problem. It started every time for him (it was after Thanksgiving into Dec.

If you replaced the filter and do a fuel pressure check and the fuel pressure is below specification you need to replace the pump.

Complete pumps start at about 130 at rock auto. You can also get rebuild kits for less but I'd just get a compete pump.

You need to check the fuel pressure. You also could take the fuel cap off and listen for the pump while someone else turns the key on. That will tell you if it's running. The fuel pressure test will tell you if it's weak.

Thanks. There is zero pressure. I have been watching videos on youtube, I did not understand that the pump hanger was a complete kit and the pump was something that would need to be installed on the pump hanger. When I called Pep Boys, the guy quoting me the price talked about the two items as if either would be an option, depending what was already there.

I am going to drop the tank and complete the replacement.

Can you hear the pump try to prime when you turn the key on?

No, at that point, the pump was no longer making any noise. It basically took 14 months for the pump to go. I started with the relay. I had 3 weeks of no issues.

Then it completely failed. I replaced the filter, basically because everything I read said that was the next step. There was no change, as by this point the pump appears to have completely failed.

I took on the replacement of the pump myself (a friend did all the work). It was disassembled in under 3 hours, and re-assembled in under an hour.

Thanks for your replies.

My dad has an 89 chevy, we replaced his pump last fall. It's already dead again, got it from autozone. This year he bought an ac delco from rock auto.
