how can i adjust a/f?

I have a 03 supercrew. ive added dual exhaust and a cai. now, when it idols it "stumbles" like its missing. also the tach will go from 800rpm, (then a click sound, from under the hood) to 1100 for a cpl seconds. then back to 800. i think it may be throwing the air/fuel off. but i dont know of any way to adjust it, to fix the issue. any advice would be appreciated. btw ive read alot of threads on this site and finnaly decided to register. so im a newbee here.

Almost sounds like your a/c engaging/disengaging. I assume you have a 5.4? Always be specific with your vehicle type plz. Unless your boosted there is absolutely no reason to manually adjust a/f ratios. Look up the GOTTS intake mod it will serve you better than that CAI. 99% of the time if your engine is stumbling it is ignition related (COPs, plugs, wires). You could try cleaning the MAF sensor and see if that helps. How many miles? What brand of plug are you using? A little bit of history would help alot. Welcome to the site!

You have upset the calibration of the Mass Air meter 'reading' with the CAI change for one thing.
The high idle speed is either an air leak or the IAC is sticky and slow to respond to computer commands for air bypass corrections to the correct hot idle speed to 750 +/- 50 rpm..
With this condition you will have cold start issues as well.
Changing the A/F ratio is not the fix besides you have no way to do it.
Just recently someone else tried the same thing and go the same result.
Good luck.

Wouldnt hurt to disconnect the battery for a few minutes then reconnect, let it calibrate for the added air?. Mine kind of did the same thing on my other truck when installing a cheap cai kit.

Also, go back over everything and make sure it is all tight with no air leaks. What intake kit did you install? MAF sensor location has probably changed as well.

thx for the info. Yes it has a 5.4 with a hair over 101k im not sure what kind of plugs or wires are in it. The previous owner babied the truck. it was elderly owned and nver used for work. mostly a 4x4 snow runner. it ran good till i put the ebay cai on it. ive heared alot of people talk about the "gotts mod" what is it?

The gotts modd is simply making the intake inlet larger to allow more flow. Use the search function it will pop up. and yes just diconnect the negative battery cable for a few minutes that will help alot. You DO NOT have plug wires on the 5.4 you have what are called Coil over plugs so there is one coil over plug per cylinder. Best plugs for these trucks are motorcraft plugs. And you might want to change or have them changed if you arent sure. Changing sparkplugs on the 5.4s isnt for the faint of heart, if you dont have atleast half a day to do them have someone change them. and in order to prevent blow outs from happening torque the spark plugs to 28 ft/lbs without antisieze. Again these are great motors IF they are properly maintained.

When I installed my CAI on my 4.6 it did the exact same thing as yours. All i did was like toyz said and disconnected the battery and it fixed the problem. MAke sure some of those cheap ebay ones don't use all of the exisiting vacuum lines which could also pose a problem.

i looked up the gotts mod last nite after i posted the question (duh!) lol i had a 03 durango, i did that to once and had good results. u say not to use antisieze on the plugs! why is that? i usually use brake fluid on the threads. it helps them go in easier (w/o cross threadding) and is a good penetrant. i will definatly invest into new plugs soon tho. thx

Antisieze will cause blowouts take a look at the link glc posted. The triton motors are very picky about how things are serviced. But yes get new plugs i pulled mine out at 130,000 and they were trashed. dont wait too much longer on em it will save you in the long run. If you keep these engines properly maintained you can see 250000 miles out of them atleast. Good luck with it all!
