confused

ok so i am thinking of re installing my CAI what I am confused about is the IAC breather tube. the instructions are the generic 4.6/5.4 ones but does the 5.4 have a diffrent tube? mine looks like this (not my pic) Name: IMG_20110304_212951.jpg

is that what I am supposed to hook up to the tube? the instructions show this piece but i don't have that. can someone show me a pic of the 4.6 with a CAI with the mini engine cover off?

Why install a CAI? Do a Gotts mod to the stock airbox.

yes there is an extension hose and it is like 3' long?!?! the CAI has 2 nipples on it to hook up hoses. I know 1 goes to the crank case breather. the other is supposed to go to the IAC valve. so I guess my 2 questions boil down to is the IAC breather/valve the same on the 4.6 as it is on the 5.4 and is the "box" thingie needed. I know you are supposed to re use the one for the 5.4 but it looks like a small fuel filter where the 4.6 one is just an empty box.

well im hooking it up now and I am going to cut a 1" piece of the tube to attach it just like the stock configuration and i am going to re use the original crank case tube as well.

last time I had removed the "box" thing you can see in the 1st picture and ran a hose directly from the IAC and got a CEL.

I have looked at 3 different manufacturer instructions all seem to be based on the 5.4l not the 4.6 AEM doesn't have a 4.6 intake listed on the website only 5.4

its about the box thing. (box in first picture) there is no room for it under the cover. as the holes for the intake tube are further down than stock I orignaly was running with out the box and had a line going straight from the intake tube to the IAC. but I was getting a CEL with that.

well i got it back on then took it for a drive for about 30-45min. low speed surface street driving as well as hwy driving for the first 10 min the engine with idle down to about 350-400 when stopping as soon as i let my foot off the brake it would go to 500. after driving around a bit it started getting in to the 500-600 range now at a stop in gear I am sitting at 650 with ac on or off!!! looks like the computer likes this setup now. I still find it weird that none of the instructions tell you that there is a diffrence between the 5.4 and 4.6 IAC hookup. they just let us 4.6 owners fend for our selfs! I have a few pics of they install and how i got the box to work at http://andysford.4benoits.com/?p=38

All that box does is quiet the intake down and is not needed. I haven't had mine on for 9 years or better and I just installed a CIA for a friend on a 2000 F150 with a 5.4 and removed his aswell without any issues. On the 5.4 I trimmed the front of the enginge cover to accomidate the hose and on the 4.6 I used a piece of 3/4 heater hose with a 90 on it and trimmed to fit. The Factory cover still fits without issues.
