Alternator
Alternator
Plugged connector in backwards into alternator, now according to AutoZone's test machine Alternator is bad. Can I just replace the regulator or would the rectifier have also been damaged? Or should I just bite the bullet and get a rebuilt one?
Regardless, if needing a new one, I would fish ebay for an OEM Motorcraft replacement. You can find those cheap sometimes. If you look among the used Alts you often come across new take offs. They can't be sold as new, but are new just the same.
When it comes to those cheap rebuilds, even guaranteed replacements may have you traveling to and from the supplier until you happen to get one that will last a little while.
Thanks
Just wanted to know if changing the regulator would repair the alternator. Would the alternator still produce voltage with the regulator bad. My thoughts that it would still produce voltage just not regulated so we are looking at any where from 12 to 20 volts am I think right?
Well excuse us, - but it depends what exactly happened to it. There's more to it than what you posted. Connecting it backwards didn't do it. What else did you do to it?
the regulator is built in to the alternator. most people just go get another (new or reman) alternator, but if you feel comfortable taking the thing apart to try to fix it..... have at it

What happened
Took alternator off to remove intake manifold to repair broken heater tube at rear of manifold. Replaced plugs, new o-rings on injectors and new gaskets on intake manifold. Replaced intake, reinstalled alternator, plugged in connector (backwards as I said) reconnected battery cable, started engine. Went for a drive down the street about a mile, that's when I noticed the battery light on.
Checked the connections and found that I had plugged the connector in wrong.
Put connector in the right way, turned engine back on, battery light still on.
Took alternator off and took it to auto zone where they tested it 2 times and both times it said failed. Why I am questioning all of you is that a rebuilt alternator is 170.00 dollars. If it is just a matter of getting a regulator for 40.00 dollars I save 130.00 of my hard earned money. Is that explanation enough???
