Hi, the starter in my '98 with the 5.4 recently stopped working. I would like to figure out whether its getting power before I replace it. Does anyone know how I can test for power on the starter?

 

Hi, - First go down under and take a look at the starter connections. They can corrode down there pretty bad. There's a smaller wire that likes to break off as well. Check that out first. It's very rare these starters fail. It's usually a connection problem.

 

Thanks, the sort of braided ground wire seems to be rotted off(it fell apart when I touched it) do you think that ground wire could be replaced? I'm leaning toward just replacing the starter because its getting prettyold and I've got a lifetime guarantee from NAPA so it will be free.

 

youll have to replace that wire. Its kid of a drag to do but thats the only real fix.
