Got my first ford!

Well actually car ever.

It's a 1998 F150 XL. It was only $1000 and has some issues but I wanted something I could work on. I gotta keep myself busy somehow since I'm taking a year off between high school and college.

It has some serious interior issues, most the issues are cosmetic.
However, and correct me if I'm wrong, but on pre 2000 Fords you have to pull the gear shifter out and then down to drive right? Cause I think the owner before me just pulled it straight down so its a bitch to get into gear. Like the stick is really loose and it sticks a little in first. Is that most likely requiring a new transmission or could it just be something in the steering column?

Welcome to the wonderful world of FORD!
First On Race Day

Good luck, and most importantly, have fun.
Sorry, I'm not much help on the tranny issue since I have a manual.
(I'm assuming you've got an auto since you mentioned the steering column)

It sounds like maybe a new shift cable and shifter assembly. I doubt its a transmission issue if its the shifter that is loose. Show us some pics!! Tell us what motor, mileage and all the specs on the truck. Oh and welcome to the world of ford and the site youll find both amazing places!

Ilk take some pictures tomorrow when its light out.

It has a little over 140,000 miles though and 2WD. It's white and beat up. I'll post pictures of it tommorow for sure. The guy who owned it before me spray painted the transformer logo on the hood... Which I dislike, any suggestions to get it off.

I think the only way is to have the hood stripped and repainted

Spray pb blaster or wd 40 on the transmission linkage and whole assembly. Then you will need to drop the steering column(just lower it) and inspect the shifter its probably busted up and you will need a new one. Pretty easy job...
Good luck and congrats and your first smart purchase

Hopefully so cause I don't want to drop the money to rebuild a transmission right now.

Yes, do what 6jeff6 said. And you're transmission is fine. Enjoy the truck!
