Which transmission fluid to use?

I have a '01 F-150 4x4 with a 4R100 transmission. The transmission dipstick indicates usages of Mercon V fluid but the owner's manual specifies Merco V only for the 4R70W and regular Mercon for the 4R100. Is this just a case of the same dipstick being used for both transmissions?

Goggle FORD TSB-06-14-4.
It will tell you that as of July 1, 2007, Mercon will no longer be made.
Mercon V will be the replacment.
Do this to ensure you see it and are getting the correct answer.
At this point you may never find any Mercon unless some one has unsold stock on the shelf.
Good luck.

Same here. Pricey, but worth it.

Well, I ask because I was at a Canadian Tire store last night and every bottle of transmission fluid specified on it that it was NOT to be used with vehicles requiring Mercon V; and there was no Mercon V to be found anywhere. I'll keep looking. Thanks for the info!

Mercon v

I want to Thank you all who responded to my question about Mercon v.
I took a suggestion and went with Valvoline Max Life. The parts store said it was compatible. When I got home I still had questions and contacted Valvoline. There Max Life exceeds OEM specs and so there for has not been approved for OEM by Ford. And of course because of California's regulations they don't print on the Max Life label. California can only use OEM Mercon V.
