Door locks with keys in ignition

I just got a new to me 2003 F-150. Yesterday I locked my keys in the ignition. The key warning buzzer wasn't working but today I was able to fix it by reading a few post on this forum. Even with a working buzzer I am still able to lock the truck with the keys in the ignition. Does anyone know if the doors should automatically unlock when the keys are in the ignition? Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes of course they do. Lots of people drive around with doors locked nowdays. Make sure when you get out you have the keys. I locked my truck one time at the car wash keys in it running. I was wiping the inside door and hit the button.. and no they dont do anything automatic.

My doors automatically lock about 30 seconds after starting the engine. The doors unlock automatically when the engine is turned off. I have gotten caught a few times, starting the truck to warm it up, and the doors locked. Believe me... these trucks are a p.i.t.a. to get into when they are sealed up!

There is actually A way to dissable that auto lock feature, it is in the owners manual, i did it after i locked my keys in the truck once, dont remember how to though. there is a series of hitting the lock and unlock buttons with the key on then off

The auto lock feature sounds like a terrible idea. I would disable all of that stuff. I drove a rental car once that when you put it in Drive, it locked the doors. Just horrible. Glad I own an XL.

Yup. Went through the procedure several times at one point, but could not get it to disable. Haven't tried since. I just got in the habit of lowering the driver window.... just in case.

All you have to do is get a key cut and put it in a magnetic holder and put it some place outside where you can get it.
Of course it won't start the truck but will operate the lock.
Saves a lot of hassle.

What years have the auto locking feature. Was it standard at one point or always optional?

Thanks

I have a locking issue with mine in that they dont go down. When I press the button, they try to, but dont. Is this related to the auto lock feature? I had one guy tell me I needed to replace the power lock component inside the door...but it seems odd that it is both doorts.

The power unit is a motor that turns a spirel shaft at a fast rate to pull a wire link down or push it up.
You do indeed have some issue requiring the removal of the door panels and a look at what is wrong.
It has nothing to do with signalling if the basic opertion is faulty.
Good luck.

Mine has the auto lock, it's horrible. It should lock when the car is put in gear and unlock in park like my chevy does. I've been locked out 2 or 3 times. After the first time I got a spare key.

Thanks for the responses. The doors are locking themselves so I guess the autolock feature is working. I was hoping with the keys in the ignition and the truck turned off that that it wouldn't allow you to lock the door. All of my other vehicles do this so I guess it will just take some getting used to. Hopefully the now working door buzzer will be enough to stop me from leaving the keys in the ignition.

You could do this, and then you could get a call from your wife saying the truck won't start, and you could load up your tools and head down to try to figure out what's wrong w/ the truck, and you could find out she's trying to start the truck with the wrong damn key

taken from experience, I assume. Probably wasn't so funny at the time, though
