Engine tries to die

I have a 2003 F150 5.4 that has a very intermittent problem. Sometimes when driving down the road it the engine will practically die for a split second , off and on. The RPM's go to zero but it kinda restarts I guess is the best way describe it. it jumps and jerks when it happens. There is no service engine light or anything like that. It did it today and would barely run then it stopped and ran perfect for about a total of 3 hours of driving. It first did it about 2 1/2 months ago once and then again about a week ago and was really bad today for a little while. Does anyone have any ideas?

I've checked all of the connections I could find. Could the battery itself cause it to intermittently do that?
