Need for speed on my 4.6L
Need for speed on my 4.6L
Well I come here out of some frustration I have a 1998 f150 4x4 with a 4.6L and 3.55 gear ratio and have done a lot to it and it just doesn't want to pick up the pace. My fuel economy has gone way up 32% after just about every bolt on mod this truck can take does anyone have any ideas. I will list my mods below.
Electric fans from Troyer Performance part # PPI-EFK
Under drive pulley from Troyer Performance Part # ASP 528774
K&N 57 series air intake part # 57-2541
Edelbrock throttle body part # 3874
MSD ignition part # 8241
MSD plug wires part #32579
NGK Iridium IX spark plugs PART # TR55IX
Magnaflow cat back 3" single out part # 15069
JBA shorty cat forward Headers jet hot ceramic coated part # 1677SJS
Edge Evolution CS Gas Part # 15050
The only things I have left that I plan to do is cut my old stock cats out and replace them with magnaflow hi flow cats and upgrade my edge programmer to a gryphon with custom tunes for my mods . ( I have to say the nonexistent customer service go to our Gryphon forum with questions is very frustrating).
Any ideas.
My quarter mile is still close to stock even after all those mods I know its a big heavy truck but gezz.

Hey.
Of all those mods, only the tuner really added any solid, substantive gains. The rest are what I'd classify as supportive mods.
A 2V responds best with premium octane custom tuning.
Deeper gears will help, but really, only a blower will give you what you want, perf-wise.
The 4.6 is really behind the curve in terms of overall grunt, without extensive (and expensive) internals work.

Fun Fact - 15.5 MPG is roughly the same consumption as 15.5 L/100km (where the two inversely proportional curves meet) to appease both the metric and imperial crowd.
And that is also exactly where my truck sits on average, give or take seasonally.

Yeah unfortunately I don't want to spend the money on a supercharger or turbo my goal wasn't speed when I started this project its was too increase fuel economy and I did that I went from 11mpg city and 17mpg hwy to 15- 16 city and 22 -25 highway.
After looking at all the mods I was like man this thing should be a bit quicker but after doing a few of the performance tests on my edge the numbers were still very close to stock. I don't think I'm going to do anymore after the cats and gryphon. I would love to put performance heads cams and intake manifold on it but if its only a smig faster I'm going to say its not worth it and I'm going to put the money to a new mustang instead. I drove a 2005 Mustang GT with similar mods that I have on my truck and that's when my frustration grew. That thing was quick as hell 0 -60 in 4.3 seconds though I don't expect my f150 to be quick like that I do expect a better 0-60 mph than 9.5 tics after what I have done to it.

Whenver you think yer truck is quick, just hop into a musclecar - it's a great reality check

Thanks MGD I love my truck but I think its upgrade days are over and I am at least glad I made it to my mpg goal of 25mpg hwy. But yes I do see a either a pony car or dodge challenger in my future with a good engine to build off of. But we will see what custom tunes will do for me. I think the most frustrating part was spending 14 hours putting shorty headers on with no noticeable results in power. Really questioning all the info on troyerperfromance website. I'm still going to take a couple of dyno runs after the gryphon upgrade to see if the hp came up.
With all due respect I'm never touching the headers on my truck again that was the job from hell. I will put long tubes on my next project car or truck But i just put those boys on two weeks ago so the its still way to fresh started at noon on a Sunday and finished at 2 am although I did do the catback at the same time but that was easy and only took an hour and a half.
