Question about flow masters
I wouldn't say I hate Flowmasters, it just isn't to my likings. Just my personal preference.
Sound is one thing, performance is obviously another. Well, with this thread anyway.
With a Flowmaster, you'll be on the fuel a hell of allot more than you would with the OEM muffler. That's because the OEM mufflers out perform the Flowmaster. Sad ain't it. But hey, they sound good right, -and sound is power! - Not always lol.
You have flow running into a maze of sorts (chambers), - it's worse than a bottleneck, -spent gases are slamming into a wall, not just one, more so. What happens ? Gases back up at systems end and the engine has to work that much harder to push those gases thru. Robbing torque and HP. Hook up a 3-5000 lb trailer and it gets much worse. The more you need the more it restricts, the more your into the fuel to keep things happening.
How can you prove this to yourself ? Well, your running a muffler that's netting you less than OEM performance. Thro a straight thru design on there that enhances OEM performance AND sounds good, the difference will be obvious. Easily felt.
It's my reason to hate those mufflers. But I'd rather have the vehicle perform.

is the super 10 a straight thru since its single chambered? Or is straight thru something completely different. I have noticed some difference in towing and was wondering what it is. I have hi flows but if I can get some power back and still have decent sound what should I get?

Magnaflow's are a favorite, but there's others.- Borla is #1 IMO. Depends what you like, the sound you want. You can get both performance and sound very easily.
I had flowmaster SI/DO on when I first put on my Procharger...I disliked the "sound"...after I removed the Procharger and installed the Harley/Eaton Supercharger and ran with the flowmaster I switched to a SI/SO Magnaflow...sound and performance much better
I had true dual original 40's on mine before. Sound was pretty decent, but I had terrible in cab drone at cruising speeds. I also suffered on the low end torque as others stated. I switched over to IMCO straight through mufflers or "glasspacks". Im very pleased with them. At cruising or idle I cant even hear them, but when I step on the gas you can hear me coming. The sound is also more throatier and deeper than the old flows.
Wow, I must be really missing something here.... I regularly pull a 7,500 lb camper and several antique tractors weighing anywhere from 3,000-5,000 lbs. I have not noticed any torque loss while heavy pulling. I don't know what all the torque loss talk is all about, but I really see no difference between stock, Magnaflow, Flowmaster, and no muffler (power wise). If there is any difference, it is negligible at best (in my experience at least).
Well that's to bad.
You are, -or were. So at this point, if you continue to dog that engine the way you have, - what's missing is the simple fact that your to damn lazy or hard headed to do something about it.
Don't beat yourself up to badly. Not everyone is at the same comprehension level. I think there's a paperback out there that may assist you, - "The Combustion Engine for Dummy's". Once that's understood, you can move on.
Also, search the Troyer posts on this site and visit a few Tuner forums. There isn't a BIG difference between allot of mufflers until you get into the chambered design. Try to learn, it will only help you. Being afraid of that will only keep you behind or worse, -dead last.

I'm just going to give up. Kids nowadays are so into that choking on a hairball sound, you can't tell them anything.
