Sorry bud, my crystal ball is in the shop, and my Internet goggles are flat busted, so I needs a little help here

And what is yer truck?

What are yer goals / requirements?

Do you have any sort of budget in mind?

Because I would suggest going straight to some form of forced induction and forgoing the various simple bolt-ons. A lightning swap for example.

2002 screw 5.4
Just trying to get the most out of the motor. It has a k&n that was on it when I bought it. It has 125k. My budget varies. Looking into all my options

Its a fx4 lariat.

MGDfan 03-31-2012 10:12 AM

Ok.

To do this right you need some sort of plan.

Is yer budget in the hundreds, or thousands? That will determine what you can, or cannot, do.

Do you have a power figure in mind? Real Power costs money.

Existing motor choices are bolt-ons and/or internals. Internals tend to get expensive real quick.

More info please.

Lets start in the hundreds. As for numbers I think its stock 260hp. I'm not sure. I know I want exhaust but that doesn't add a whole lot.

That's correct, unless it a full-zoot true dual, LT's, hi-flows, mandrel tubing, straight-through muffler and x-pipe stainless system - which will chew through yer $hundy$ budget all by itself. Good, positive tangible gains though - especially when coupled with a good custom tune.

Simple Bolt-ons include underdrive pullies, e-fans, gears, custom flash device running premium octane fuel (2V's respond better to this - a 3V can get more out of 87 tuning due to VCT) ... that's aboot all you can do externally ( not including a blower)

CAI - no gains.

With all of that the gains are nice but not huge. It's still a ~5500 lb brick with lousy aeros.

So a tuner would be a good 1st step. Edge, gryphon,or sct? The pulleys is there a set or buy individual? Best place to get the stuff for a good price?

I favour SCT - but a custom tuned CS/CTS is a good choice as well.

www.vmptuning.com

Pullies - Troyer Performance, Summit, etc.. (it's a set - ensure it matches yer rib count, and that it's for a truck, not a 'stang)

Efans - that's a bit more complicated as yer choices are vast - here's a good read to get you started: https://www.f150online.com/forums/ex...than-fans.html

What do you want more power for? Towing, hauling, bragging, burn-outs, local drags?

Hell, my 232,000 mile 97 still has all the power I need to tow a #5000 up 6% grades...

I'm too old to worry about the last 3 things in my first sentence, but I do like a nice seat 'O' the pants feel... ;)

More of a sounds good and gets out of its own way more or less. Burnouts and drags arent for me anymore either.

I'd just get a nice cat back exhaust for the sound part (I did that way back in 2001 when I first got my 97). That'll eat up 'hundreds' of $$ right there.... Another 'hundreds' for a tuner and on and on!

Remember that there is always a give and take with every jump up in power... Decide what you are willing to give in order to take... :)

Good luck with the project!

one of the most vague statements ive ever read.

if you want the MOST out of your 5.4 go 4V twin turbo

but seriously, a sct tuner, efans, and exhaust with gotts mod would be more than enough to eat away at your budget :D

A stock 5.4 gets out of its own way. Get a decent exhaust to make it sound good and get a programmer with custom tunes to optimize the power and mileage.

i would go with a magnaflow muffler, that have a nice growl with no drone.
