97 Lariat 4x4 Transmission Filter
97 Lariat 4x4 Transmission Filter
Hi,
I want to change out the tranny fluid on my 97 4x4 including the transmission filter. I been told that I need to remove the front differential to get access to remove the transmission pan. Is this correct?
I don't want to change the fluid without changing out the filter. Seems like a waste of money to me.
It has about 166k miles
I have never changed it in the past 1.5 yrs or 6k miles.
I'm thinking about also adding a tranny temp sensor and gauge because I been towing a lot.

The pan is easily accessible. you also need to drain your converter there is a rubber plug at the bottom of the converter you remove it then I manually rotate the engine via the big crankshaft bolt turn it clockwise until the plug is visible. Trans and converter hold about 14 quarts. I have no Idea how to install a trans temp gauge.

no you dont need to remove the front diff.
if you changed it 6K miles ago, there really isnt any need to change it unless you can tell by the fluid it is bad.
i used the trans test port on the drivers side of the trans to get my fluid temp reading.

i meant to say i only driven about 6k miles with it and i don't think it has ever been changed
If its never been changed at that many years old I'd plan on changing it again in a short time. The new fluid may break deposits loose and all. I would change it again within a year or 12000 miles..
