new guy w/engine problems
Hi, so I found this forum because of the dreaded blown plug issue...I have a 98 lincoln navi with the 5.4L triton motor..Not sure what exactly the cause of the blown plug is, engine has a little over 200,000. the tip of the plug that got blown is also smashed into contact with the electrode. is there another issue that is at hand or will the time sert repair fix everything?
located in the bay area, CA. Do mechanic work as a living but first time experiencing this and don't want to shell out 400 for the correct tool...

Welcome! I am going to move this so you will get more comments on your proble.
Timesert is a permanent repair of the problem. Just don't try Helicoil. There is a member here that rents out the Timesert kit, if you need one.

thanks, yea i sent him a PM already. I'm just hoping that the crushed tip is because of it jumping up and down and it hitting the head. I have nightmares of the piston hitting the spark plug causing the crushed tip to the electrode but am hoping for the best...
yea, i kno that if a piston were to actually be able to reach the plug it would only be because of catastrophic internal damage.
Anyone know if the cheaper kits online work (inserts, not helicoil) or do I have to go with the $400 Time Sert kit?

The other alternatives appear to not be reliable .
Good luck.

RENT a Timesert kit from member "Galaxy". (Least expensive alternative that WORKS)
OR:
Have Ric or Dave come up from SoCal to fix it. (Refer to MGD's link)
OR:
Drive it down to them on 7 cylinders, all you have to do is unplug the fuel injector.

Looks just like my plug that blew out. Mine worked its way loose and blew out the last thread. I was able to thread a new plug back in and it seemed to catch the same amount of threads as the other plugs. Hopefully it doesnt blow out again but I am checking to make sure it is tight as often as I can.
