Truck feels like it has an engine break...

Hey guys,

So I've had this issue for a little time but it will be here one day gone the next. As I cruise on the highway, if I let all the way off the throttle my truck will coast fine for a few seconds and then it feels just like a jake. RPMs drop and she "puts the wo' on". It's not like it's an instant stop but its most definitely noticeable even by a passenger. I was thinking it may be something with the EGR causing it but honestly have no idea. Anyone?

At low speeds it doesn't do it, at least I haven't noticed I guess. Normally around 60-70 is where I can really feel it.

First thing is to use standard terms to discribe the action.
I don't know what a 'jake' is. Here it's a term given to a young Turkey.
'puts the wo on'. Is that a slow down of some sort?
Try it again so we all know what's going on, please.

A "jake" is an engine compression brake found on over-the-road diesel trucks.

With the info provided it sounds to me like you have a torque converter lockup issue.

Bluegrass,
A jake brake is a common name for engine brakes as he put in his subject. Like people call personal water crafts jetskis even though Jetski is specifically Kawasaki.

And that's all I have...I have 0 knowledge of the problem...I just hate distracting responses when someone has legitimate question.

Thanks for elaborating guys. Blue, I apologize for the southern twang. With a screen name like that I'm a little surprised you didn't pick up on it though. Haha. Just pulling your chain. What other problems would I see due to the converter locking up?

straight jacket mix up

Do you have OD? If so, turn it off and see if you can recreate the issue.

Mine has a similar "wo on" it is more like a HP drain plug bobbing up n down like pappy lunker nibbling before he took the bait and my drag isn't set right....

but on a serious note, when mine does it, I never let off the throttle.... I have been chasing it down and my issue goes away when OD is off. So I have been driving like that for a bit...

my problem is I have more than ONE problem....

Oil is about 45% left and checked fluids when I changed last. All checked out. Everything is making me think convertor.

I'll take the hwy when I get out of class today and try the OD situation. I'll report back on that.

Normally when you let off the throttle at certain speeds the 'Converter lockup' disengages for a short period then locks back up again. This is normal.
If the 'diode' operation is faulty at the same time you will feel a tighness not normally felt.
The slow down is akin to a hard drive train coupling with no converter slip in between to make it soft.
Good luck.

A diode failure is internal.
It's a one way roller lockup assembly.
If the diode were to lock up full time, then the trans would allow the motor to keep trying to move the truck when coming to a stop or keep it moving once at speed, in gear and stall the motor with the brakes applied since there is no converter slip in this kind of situation. Act much the same as a standard shif and clutch would.
The info is just that, until proven to be the case.
This is why everyone needs to be accurate in discriptions and testing/observaions so at least there is a resonable chance to think what the issues might be and to offer sugestions based on the discription that is close to the problem without any more confusion then need to be.
Sorry to be a nit picker but trying to be of some help on a board is very difficult, making it helpful to the original poster.
There are two main reasons people come to these boards.
1. They are trying to save money and 2. They often do not realize the complexity of the vehichle they own.
Nothing is like the old days any longer.

Blue, in all sincerity, I apologize if I have poked at the insufficient descriptive nerve that all forum going veterans surely have. In all honesty, however, did my description not suffice in showing you what issue I was having? Without intending to be disrespectful in any way that's the best way I knew how to paint the picture for you guys without you actually driving the truck. Let's face it, I could have just said that it "wants to slow down or somethin'". I tried to record a video of it happening today but just as in all diagnostics, when you need it to mess up it doesn't.

Na don't labor over it. You don't need to apologize for anything.
Just made a point because all the world looks at this board and may not know what you mean.
Put it to rest.
Hope i've offered something to help you with your transmission issue.
Good luck.
