1999 F150 XLT 5.4 4x4 Rancho lift 35" Nitto trail grappler M/T

Ok so here is my problem iv been having for a lil while.

When i turn to the left i get this groaning harmonic type of sounds. Well it sounds like a bad wheel bearing. When im turning from an incline lets say im going down hill and turning left into a driveway as my truck pitches to the outside when im making the corner the noise gets worse as more weight is put on the right tire. Also if im going strait down the street and i start weaving back n forth it will do it when i weave left.

I have jacked the truck off the ground and shook the tire top to bottom and there is absolutely no play in it what so ever and the tire isnt binding up when i spin it. It has a tad bit resistance but i think thats normal.

What could this problem be??

 

It's your right hub bearing assembly.

 

If the hub bearing was going out wouldnt the wheel have up and down play?

 

I am getting the sames issues in my 06. No play either. I'm also pullin hard to the right and wearing bad on the outside front right. Hope you figure out your issue

 

I have replaced them on my truck and my SIL's moutaineer, and they
didn't have any play. Can't always go by that.

 

Not necessarily because on our 4x4's, the cv axle/nut contributes to keeping a load on the hub, so it would be harder to tell if it is bad. Not a hard job to do a hub bearing since they are a bolt-on item. Just time consuming and pricey... especially if you have all wheel ABS like I do

 

Alright thanks for the input guys. I looked up the part at napa and its about 150 bucks so that's not to bad. Looks like something i should be able to do in my garage with a budlight and a 3 1/2 ton jack.

Is there any way of inspecting the hub once its off the truck for wear or is it just one of those slap the new part in and hope it fixes the problem jobs?

 

when you get the cv axle out of the hub bearing you will be should be able to tell then. Three bolts hold the hub bearing to the spindle. Not too hard... remove wheel,caliper, brake rotor,cv axle nut, sperate spindle from upper control arm IIRC (to get out cv axle shaft), then hub bearing bolts and ABS plug if you have one.

It's been a while since I did my left side so I may have missed a step... but really not all that hard.

 

I don't think that is necessary to separate the spindle and upper control arm. I thought it was just an axle nut and a few bolts holding the hub on and it comes strait out making sure to push the CV inwards as to not over extend it.

 

yeah, you may be able to do that.... now that I think about it. Like I said, it's been a while, but it's not hard.

I have the same problem on my 2005 f150 supercrew, I took it back to Firestone 3 times and after 3 new rotors it does it again, Strange that it goes away when they put a new rotor on but after about 200 miles its back.. help. ?

This reminds me of how much I miss replacing a $20 bearing years ago instead of throwing away a good hub. What used to take an hr or so and $20-30 now takes 15 min and $300. Great ideas those companies came up with huh! Another good hub to the scap yard! Idiots!

 

Really easy/fun job. I replaced mine with Timken 505129's that I bought off eBay.
