Question 2001 F150 OEM cat system

First off, I'm new here, sooo, hello everyone.

Secondly, I have just started putting some work into my truck, and i'm not sure what kind of cat system it has. My buddy has an 04 F-150, and he was able to cut off the rear cats because he has a 4 cat system, and the rear ones were not O2 monitored. Does the 2001 have the same setup? Or is it different?

By the way, It is a Lariat SuperCrew 5.4L

Thanks in advance.

Pretty much the same setup. You could easily delete the rear 2, and maybe do the Gotts 02 (seasrch) mod if need be. I just replaced my 4 cats with high flows and long tube headers, putting the o2 sensors back where they were and zero lights etc. You should be fine, welcome also!!

I have O2 sensors AFTER the rear cats on my '97?? Not sure on a '01, but I would think they are the same.. Pretty easy to tell... Crawl under and look..

Thanks, the new exhaust system i'm putting in will sound better without the cats, and that is why I was wondering. And as far as high flow cats are concerned, which ones would you recommend?

Throw on a pair of magna flow hi flows. They arent suppose to trip your CEL and they will give you a better sound while keeping you street legal. You may pay up to $500, more or less depending where you live I guess. There is also a good sticky written up here https://www.f150online.com/forums/ex...ust-guide.html

Actually, you can make money swapping your factory cats for Maggy HF's. I did anyway, but I did the work myself.

Thank you! I just got my new system installed today. True Dual Flowmaster Super 44's with a 2.5 inch X-Pipe. 2.5 inch tubing and 3.5 inch tips. Spent $525 and now I need to wait about 4 weeks to get the high flow cats. I have also managed to cut my 0-60 time down with the new system vs. my old one.

Congrats man! you will be really happy once you throw the hi flows on. If possible get your old cats when they take them off so you can make some money off them.

I got the quote today, I need four cats at $215 a piece. And I can't just cut off the rear cats as I had intended. It is a 4 cat system, however, the O2 sensor is behind the rear cats, so I can't cut them off. :/

You can replace them with a single high flow cat and it will pass emissions. The dealer probably wont do it but someone like minieke will. If you save the old ones and scrap them they just might offset most of the cost of replacing them. I wouldnt do it unless there bad. Dont believe there is much performance gain out of the deal.

yeah replace each pair w/ a hi flow. Magnaflows the manufacturer. go to a shop that specializes in exhaust. Some shops will want to keep your stock cats and say they are cores so they can scrap them so you might want to ask them before hand

The best way is to find someone who will install or if you can do it your self. If you do it yourself the old cats will pay for the new. Or just use a sawsall hack the old ones off and drive it over with no exhaust. Tell them your cats got ripped. Happens all the time.

I think I'm going to replace two of the cats with magna high flows, and just cut the other two off. Not sure yet, Im going to two other shops to see what they think.
