Rear Axle/ Differential
Rear Axle/ Differential
Hey everyone,
First off let me just say that I have lurked on this forum before and am glad to finally be apart of it!
I have a 98 F150 SCAB 2wd with 373 000 kms. I love the truck and plan on keeping it a long time- I will be her last owner. Still pulls strong and no major issues to speak of (knock on wood lol).
I mainly use my truck as a daily driver and to go camping and tow/ haul stuff with- utility trailers, rv's once in a while, etc. Main use of this truck is for function. I already have some mods- exhaust mainly- and plan on many more, when money allows that is
I have an open differential with 3.05 gears. I like having the open diff as this is my daily driver but their are times when having a real 2wd rear end would help. I have already done some research but haven't quite found straight up answers.
What selectable lockers are available that act like an open differential until I switch the locker on?
Which ones in your opinion are strongest and/ or give most bang for your buck? what would you recommend to me?
I want to leave it off most of the time and only lock the axle when needed/ hills, getting unstuck (have only been stuck once), or just having fun
Thanks for all you're help in advance and sorry for the long first post. Can't wait to start sharing my tips/ tricks that I have learn t over the years with the community

Sounds like you really just need a limited slip diff.. I bought a ford traction loc for less then $500. You get into full on lockers and they get expensive.. From the sound of it a limite slip would do you fine.
Selectable, you need to look into ARB, I think yukon has one, TJM (australian company so might not have one for the f150). All of those will run you close to a grand before install.
a regular full time locker starts around $300, install should be easy on these. Selectable not so much.

Jethat- Thanks for your suggestion. I think a limited slip could work too- I will have to think about it further.
Thanks for all the help guys. If anyone else wants to chime in go ahead cause I'm still looking for more information.
welcome to the forum!
im assuming you have a 4.6 motor with a 8.8" rear end since i dont think the 9.75 came with gears that low.
how about this?

i know someone made a thread where they just ordered one for his truck. i cant remember his name tho.

One thing I don't get though, and sorry if this sounds stupid, but how exactly will it convert my open diff to posi-trac when its not switched on. how exactly does it connect to the drivers side wheel? Is the axle shaft on that side compatible? When in the air one wheel goes one way and one goes the other- does something have to be flipped or reversed.
Thanks again
That is exactly what I am looking for. Great price for what it is too. However I have heard some negative things about it. I will have to do some more research.

That should help explain it.
Yes the axle shaft's will be fully compatible (as long as your order the right one haha).
As for your last question I'm a bit puzzled. What do you mean by in the air? Even if you have both rear tires off the ground and the truck in neutral you can only spin the tires in the same direction. At no time will the rear tires be able to go in different directions. At least with a lsd.

Thanks for all the info. It has really helped answer my questions. Reading my other post though, I can see I used the wrong wording/ Wasn't explaining myself correctly, sorry.
Just wanted to thank everyone for the help
