A Simple Transmission Fluid Change turns ....
Well: Today was not a good day.
A simple transmission fluid change turned into expensive repair:
I took the truck to the local transmission shop for simple fluid change. It has not been done in two years so I was concerned that it would be bad for the transmission. . They drained the torque converter plus new filter and pan gasket. About $130 estimate. These guys do not do flushing and he showed my why. He said the machine picks up the metal shaving and throws back against the small screens that is why transmissions fail if fluid has not been changed for a while such as my case.
They remove the pan and showed me the metal shaving on the magnet on the pan. They said this is a little more than normal. Anyway they spotted two leaks: one from the rear of the transmission where yoke-slip hooks and second before that where the replaced a gasket. It has been leaking from there for a while. Estimate = $122.
Then they pulled the drive shaft and a few minutes later called me back in to show me the U-joints are bad. U-joints were very tight when I tried to move them and they said that this will cause seal failure again if not replaced. These were original so I said how much? About $78 (parts +labor). New U-joints have zerk fittings which is a plus.
Then about 5 minutes later they bring the yoke slip out and showed me the the yoke slip is pitted. The price of new one = $178. At this point I am thinking that at this rate I will be bankrupt before my truck is fixed.
Please remember these guys are the best in town and have been around for 30 some odd years. Everyone trust them and I knew the guy who was working on my truck in there as well. So this all adds up with tax to about $575.00 and change and truck looks the same (LOL).
I could have done all this myself but didn't have time so lessons learned to say NO and do myself (LOL). Oh well, Now I have someone to blame if the transmission craps out (God forbid)

there was very little play but they were really hard to turn/rotate (whatever the motion it would be) I could tell the difference when they install the new ones. these were smooth. The big benefit I would say is it is the Zerk fittings. It is a cheap investment and all high mileage trucks should upgrade them.
