My 99 4.2 f150 has a lot of hesitation when accelerating and there is a ticking noise coming from the drivers side of the hood and i was wondering if i would get codes if i used an OBD2 scanner if the check engine light is off or if anyone know what the problem could be.

 

There may still be a code so def. put a reader on it. Possible ticking sources are lifters (check oil level), bad/clogged fuel injector or maybe even exhaust manifold leak.
