'02 difficult start

I have an '02 with a 4.2L engine and a lot of miles (235k). I bought the truck from a co-worker who has a 200 mile round trip daily commute. So I know the miles are mostly highway.

Recently, I have had an issue with a difficult start. The truck turns over fine, but just won't start. Once I try to start it several times, it will eventually fire. This has only happened to me twice, about 6 weeks apart.

Tonight, I was wondering if I was getting fuel to the engine. I went to the valve on the fuel rail, and pushed the pin, no fuel came out of the valve. I tried to start the truck again after that, and the engine fired right up. At that time I pushed the pin in the valve again, and fuel ran out.

So it seems as though I may have a fuel delivery issue. Can someone advise me as to where the best place to start tracing this problem may be?

Thanks!

sroney,
It sounds like your in-tank fuel pump is getting ready to puke on you. A lot of info here on how to diagnose and fix the problem, but I would fix it before it leaves you stranded when it goes for good...

You asked in another thread about ticking from the engine after startup. Since the V6 is a pushrod motor as opposed to the V8s being OHC, I would suspect your startup ticking may be a sticky lifter...not an uncommon problem for any high mile pushrod motor...

Welcome to the site...a lot of info and experience here and you may find your answers faster by using the search feature...even Google leads me right back here when I can't find the answers I'm after!! Good luck...

Replace fuel filter, if it still does it your fuel pump is probably on it's way out.
You can check fuel pressure with a gauge. Cycle key several times without trying to start it, pressure needs to be around 28-30 lbs. to start, running it should be in the
upper 30's.
