99 f150 black smoke and stall
99 f150 black smoke and stall
my 99 f150 triton V8 started to stall on the road today a couple times on my way home. now when i start it the truck will stall and shut off unless i have my foot on the gas. it will constantly stall now everytime i take my foot of the gas. Could this just be bad fuel and i have to work through it? Should i get fuel cleaner for it? or should i just take it to a professional? Thanks a lot
EDIT:also would cleaning the Idle Air Control Valve help?

Check the IAC first. EGR operation second.
Check engine light illuminated ?
Has the check engine light blinked then shut off ?
If you haven't any DTC's, it's most likely the IAC IMO.
Yes, you can fix yourself.

Yes. The 4.6L is easier than the 5.4L to get at, but both can be serviced. Not sure which V8 your referring to.
Yea, you should answer the questions asked before asking another. This helps in figuring out the problem. There's a few you haven't got to yet.
Possibly. Before installing a new filter, -disconnect the battery and clean the MAF sensor. Then reconnect battery w/new filter installed. Make sure your disconnected for at least a half hour.

Ok I will do this. Also I just noticed when idling it feels like the engine is revving itself up. Sadly I have no tachometer to tell the RPM

If that doesn't solve the issue. -
Disconnect the battery once more.
Remove IAC and clean w/safe product. Best stuff is DeepCreep IMO. You might be able to get away with WD40 and compressed air.
Work the mechanical's while cleaning and use compressed air to assist. You must move the mechanical plunger inside. This is most likely what's hanging.

Black smoke is excess fuel.
Leaking injectors or faulty fuel regulator.
This will cause rpm surging and stall, foul plugs etc.
Check for fuel in the regulator vacuum line and check the fuel pressure for being excessive.
The excess fuel in combustion should have been detected by the OX sensors and caused two codes to be set.
You need to do a good general maintaince on this truck given the neglect.
Likely a number if items need attention so cleaing one issue may not clear all.
Good luck.

thanks everyone for all the help. i got it running ok now but still a rough idle and black smoke when i floor it. So tomorrow i will be taking it to a mechanic because a lot of this is beyond me!
Right, - might be a good idea.
As Bluegrass suggests, it could be pressure related. The PCM shuts the rail down @ 65 psi. So if your even close to that; within 20 psi on the back side, your regulator is faulty. You may be peaking the limit intermittently thus causing shut down.
Also, if injectors are suspect. The simplest way to tell is to pull the rail and KeyOn.
The pump will then charge the lines.
If you even get a dribble from any of the 8, then that one is bad.
Just don't turn the key to start lol.
