Hello F150er.... great forum.
I have a 2002 5.4 4x4, bone stock. Renting a room in a house, so I dont have available space for installations.
I've searched this site high and low looking for ways to get more zip and better mileage. Currently getting 13.2mpg....... blah.
So, thinking exhaust, tuner and the Gotts air cleaner mod.
Now, looking for a place-- dependable, reliable-- to install the headers and exhaust system in the El Cajon area of San Diego county, CA. Anyone have a recommendation?
Then, looks like most tuners are the same..... but worth asking if there is anyone the offers that edge......?

- all tuners are not the same, custom tunes or don't waste your money
- a muffler won't do squat for your mileage, 95% of the time it will lead to a sudden decrease in mileage due to you using the loud pedal a bit more and it takes the driver mod to get the mileage back

But welcome gearheadfmc. A custom tune will perform better overall (to your specific PCM) and include your header setup in the parameters to hopefully give you better performance/MPG
E fans are going to be your best fuel mileage gain, on the cheap side. Pick up a set of used lincoln mark VIII fans from around 94-97 and a good controller. Should be about $150 for a good controller and $50 for the fan. For $200 you could see 1-3 mpg gains and some freed up hp as well with better throttle response. Bang for the buck, that is going to be it.
Why is this 5.4 so anemic? My previous rides was a 2003 SVT Cobra..... so this thing is like pedaling backward.....
..... Is it a crappy cam? Super low -- (read) emisions compression? Gearing.....?
Man, I a suffering with the "go nowhere, very slow' syndrome......
And to top it off, a tune only gets about 10hp or 15tq......? may not be worth talking about....

Tunes are good when you've added things on to really see what you've done. Go read through the tuner section on here for a while. And don't get a canned tune, they're worthless in the long run. Go custom or skip it all together.
And your trying to compare a f150 to a cobra, one main difference is the WEIGHT and SIZE. Hence why it doesn't feel like your driving a car anymore.

You must be kidding compairing a Mustang to a 6000lb plus truck that has different heads, shorter cams, different intake and poor areo-dynamics..
You will never approch the performance of MUSTANG with 'casual' modifications to a truck.
If you don't need a truck, go back to the Mustang.
Short hedders lose low end torque; you will like that even more.
Cats or mufflers won't give you any more.
Air intake mods may just perceptable show hi rpm gain but nothing off idle.
You would be waisting your money for what returns you get.

But heck, that 5.4 is pretty damn sluggish!
And just talking about it might help.
So, not much to do to get this thing movin'..... ok, well I guess I'll just try a few basics just for fun.
