Use RTV on the cover. I use Lucas 75-140 in the rear. It's about half the price of what you will get at the stealership. 3 quarts.

I did use RTV, but it leaked on me so I went with a gasket. Rock auto has them online for under $5 and it works very well.

The trick with the rtv is to put a uniform bead around the cover and let it set-up almost completely(like six hours), then bolt it on. It will be removable/reusable the next time!

And go completely around the bolt holes, not just along the outside border of the cover.

Get a tube of this and it will never leak agian. My diff cover was a nightmare to get sealed because of gouges in the housing. Greatest stuff known to man. God's gift to the automotive world.

It's more than good stuff. When my diff started leaking at the cover it was a 3 day schimozzle of swearing and throwing tools. I tried every kind of rtv I could get my hands on. Even dipped into dads super duper aviation stuff and nothing would seal it. talked to my parts guy and he said that he has something. It was the right stuff and it worked like a charm. Even the second time I have had it off.
