Check to make sure that the back window doesn't leak, wouldn't call it a hard problem to fix but if you catch it before you buy it you could gain some leverage on the price or make them fix it before you buy it.

I ended up paying around 12,000 for my truck February 2010, in Killeen Texas. 2001 5.4 lariat super crew 2WD crew with around 75k miles on it. Car Fax showed one owner and no major repairs or accidents reported. The back window did leak though and the company that the dealership was jobbing it out took five attempts to get it right.

97 trans have wearable clutches in the auto transmissions. 98+ have clutches that dont wear out (4r70w)

97-98 only came with one suicide door on the passenger side, 99+ has the suicide door on the drivers side

97-98 Did not have PATS (passive antitheft crap that can be by passed in less than 3 mins if you know what you are doing.) 99+ has pats.

97-98 have analog odometer. 99+ is digital

97-98 5.4L's have non pi (performance improved heads). 99-03 5.4 has the pi heads. 97-00 4.6 has non pi heads and 01-03 have them

COP's were on all 5.4L and 01-03 4.6L

all 5.4 (5 lug wheels) have a 9.75" rear end. all 4.6 have 8.8" rear diff

All 4.6 and 5.4 97-03 have the spark plug blow out POSSIBILITY.

97-00 have a drain plug in the torque converter 01-03 do not. There was also some valve body changes in 01-03 trans.

These are the main ones. There are still a lot of little ones like when the wheel studs changed diameter in build dates after 11/99. 6 and 8 rib belt drive systems etc.

The first four attempts they weren't doing it correctly. Instead of pulling the window out and putting new seal (butyl tape?) they a caulking gun with sealant and filled along where it seemed to be leaking, eventually it would start leaking again. The guy they sent from the main office in Temple (attempt number five) was slightly pissed because he had to clean up so much silicone before we could put the window back in.

Thank you for your support.

The ad you posted stated that it's a 5-speed auto tranny...I'm pretty sure it's a 4-speed though.

Robuilt... open the doors and check for rust on the very bottom seam. That is the only place that is a keep my eye on on my truck. Mine is minor at the moment, but is there and will taken care of soon

The seam at the bottom inside of the tailgate is subject to rust too.

Yeah, alot of conflicting and incorrect info in that ad. Those wheels are 17", not 16" as it reads. I imagine the tires aren't 235/70 either. They do appear new though.

Bed sides are something other than steel and will not rust... definitely check the tailgate and lower door seams though, lower part of the rocker panels are also susceptible. Being from Texas it should be clean all over...

I picked up a 2001 XLT Ext. Cab 4x4 in similar condition, 117k, 5.4L, etc. for $7700 in August.

Had a '98 Reg cab flareside 2wd previously with the 4.6 and I thought it had decent power, liked to rev a bit more than the 5.4

I bought this book before I started seriously looking

http://www.amazon.com/Ford-F-150-Pic...2613800&sr=1-8

isbn 1904788866

I wanted a loaded truck, so it was 2001 and later for me, but it was pretty detailed about model to model year changes, specs, trim levels, colors in and out. Pretty good coverage.

As far as the engine, thinking long term, towing may be needed (boat to the gulf, mustang to the track, etc). Something I really need to consider.

My brother in law just picked up a 2001 lariat supercrew 4x4 w/ the 5.4 and its pretty stout!
The left and right bed sides of the Flaresides are fiberglass.

Dont rule out the 4.6. I have had an 01' and my current 03' and love them. No they are not a powerhouse in stock form by any means. I had a superchips tuner for my 01' and it really woke it up. I have the Gryphon with custom tunes and this thing is amazing! I walked away from a buddy's 01' 5.4 one day after work with no problem. Currently getting about 16-17 MPG. Both are prone to plug blowouts but I dont "personally" know anyone who has blown one out on a 4.6. I know many who have on their 5.4's. Many will argue this but this is my personal experience.

I am not sying the 5.4 is a bad motor because it isnt. Just saying dont rule out the 4.6.

Good luck!
