Rear end clicking under load

In the last couple weeks i've noticed a clicking from the rear end when i'm under load, such as acceleration (in all gears), pulling up a hill, etc. The larger the load, the louder it is. It increases in frequeny as my speed increases like it is from the revolution of the shaft. It is getting worse. i can't tell exactly from where it is coming.

It isn't a grinding noise. It sounds like gear noise like there is no fluid in the differential, but the diff isn't leaking and it just started getting bad. The wife says she's heard it for a while, but i notice things like this and i hadn't noticed it.

My question is whether or not you think i'll have to bebuild the diff (I know that is high$) or if there is another common problem. I want to get the skinny before i take it in somewhere (this is probably too big a job for me)

Truck details:

1998 F150 2-wheel-drive 4.2L manual with 185k miles on it. Most of the miles are highway miles pulling a small box trailer. I've never touched the differential.

i need to get this addressed so i dont unnecessarily wear out any parts unnecessarily if it indeed is a simple replace the diff oil and seals. I definitely don't want to put it under major load like pulling my sailboat out of the water for the winter. it is bad enough just driving to work.

More info. I rev the motor in neutral (no load) and hear a slightly different noise/popping at high rpm but nothing at normal rpm. could this be exhaust and not drive train?

has the U joint been checked? start there
maybe a heat shield on the catalytic convertor is loose?

checked the heat shield. It was ok. I'm pretty sure it is the U-joint since you mentioned it. I inspected it but dont see anything major out of the ordinary other than the usual rusty look to it.

What should i look for to know if it needs replacing?

truck off, in park!
If you can grab the drive shaft and give it a twisting motion, back and forth and get some slack....if that happens, note where it is at...that is the culprit.

they can be dry too...not showing slack....be squeak a bit
