2001 4.6 liter with 285's and 3.31's?

hey im new to the forum and have several questions that I have been trying to figure out. I bought a 2001 F150 with the 4.6 liter engine. i was told that if the truck has a towing package (which I do) that it should have 3.55 gears in it. However, the guy i bought the truck from still had the window sticker from when he bought it and it says that there are 3.31's in there, not 3.55's. this definitely concerns me as I just purchased a set of 285/75/16 Mickey Thompson mtz's. How sluggish is it going to be with these 3.31's and how bad is the gas mileage gonna be? will a programmer help out or is regearing the only option? thanks a lot

You can do that and be fine, you'll notice a little power and mpg loss but it won't be horrible. Yes a programmer will help and it will be able to reset your speedo/odometer back to normal, or pretty dang close to it. I wouldn't worry about gears with those size tires unless you plan on doing some heaving towing with it it which case 4.10's might not be a bad choice. I run 315/75/16 with 3.55's and honestly I got used to it after like a week or two, so I'd put them on and see how you like it and then decide if you wanna try to get some power back.

Oh and to figure out your gear's look in the door jamb on the sticker, find the axle code listed on it, and then google it. That way you'll know for sure. And welcome to the site man!

Most trucks in 2001 with 2x4 and a 4.6 came with 3.55 or 3.73
most 4x4,s had 3.55. If you have a 4r70w tranny which you should then 4.10's with that size tire (32.8") would be a good match

thanks for the replies! my brother has an edge evolution that he used to have on his 98' and its just sitting around now. however, it MAY have caused him to have to reflash his computer (twice). so i am hesitant to use it. but it would be free and I was curious to see how much difference it would actually make. if it isn't going to be noticeable then i probably wont worry about it. but if you guys think it will make a big enough difference then i am definitely willing to try it. just didn't want to waste my time. thanks a lot!

The Edge Evo for the 97-03 should not be used as is. They have a known bad cable. If he can get Edge to replace the cable then you could try it.
