1999 F150 4.2L Whistling Noise

For the past month I have noticed a low whistling sound coming from my engine periodically. It lasts for a few seconds, then goes away. It doesn't matter whether the AC is on or not. I cannot re-create the noise with anything I do. It's not in the steering that I can tell. Any advise?

if it only happens when the engine is warm, check the coolant level...or maybe it's the clutch fan kicking on.

Also, could be a sign that the Alternator is giving notice of needed repair...bearings are singing...or idler bearing on the serpentine belt system...as outside temps get cooler this may increase.
