Air Conditioner Drain

Hello,

I have a 2003 Screw 5.4. I just bought it and have done a lot of initial maintenance--water pump, numerous hoses, plugs (and a time-sert very soon), coolant, oil, etc, etc.

I noticed that when I use the a/c, the water does not drain from the metal tube coming out from under the truck near the oil pan. Rather, it runs down the heat shield and drips down near the transfer case.

WTF? Is there a hose from the condenser to the drain that slipped off? Is that why the water is not draining through the correct drain?

Thoughts/comments/help? How hard is it to remove the plastic in the cab and check the drainage system?

Thank you.

Tommy

The drain is basically just a hole on the firewall, not a tube or hose.

the factory drain is behind a plastic wedge shaped piece of plastic, located behind the passenger cylinder head on the fire wall

Yea there's a plastic tube w/integrated grommet that slip fits into the firewall hole. It 90's right away. They do fall off tho, since they're really not fastened all that well. Right where Patrick said.

I hate to drag up an old thread, but does anyone have a picture of this? I think i saw the end of a rubber hose hanging down on that side with a little water dripping out of it, but water is still dripping on to my floor mat... Any idea how much to have un clogged at a dealer? I need to take mine in and have it checked for recalls any way...

Into the unknown

I am right in the %$#@ing middle of this same nightmare right now. My passenger footwell filled with water. My truck ('03 Fx4 Supercab 5.4) is equipped with a metal tube about 1/4 in diameter as a drain-- makes a bend around trans and disappears up into engine compartment. Can't follow it up around trans. Cannot get to it through the engine compartment-- totally buried. Have not been able to clear it by working a wire up from the bottom, and scared to get very aggressive for fear of perforating the evaporator.

Weird s--t is going on. The tube outlet is absolutely dry. But if I run A/C, sometimes I get deluge in the passenger footwell, and sometimes I get the same thing described above by Serranot/Tommy-- tons of water draining from shields/drivetrain further back than drain tube.

I am pretty much resolved to take out the dash, open the heaterbox, and rotorooter the drain tube from the heater box. Buying some tools and tube brushes to do the job. It is a total 7- or 8-hr PITA, but there are really good resources/how-to's available on it, and as big an idiot as I am, I am going to try it. I'll let you know how it goes.

My big question is-- Am I going to have to remove the evaporator (i.e. purge system of freon, etc) in order to work on the drain tube from inside the heater box, or not?

Tommy, you want the resources I have mentioned, on how to drop steering column, remove dash, and access the heater box?

k9dr

PS-- The labor is the same as to replace heater or evaporator cores-- dealership or big shop will charge you $600, not counting parts. While you're in there, good idea to replace heater blend door with less trouble-prone Dorman unit-- maybe $30.

I have since found the real drain. It is just a plastic piece that is on the passenger side near where the manifold bolts to the down pipe. I found it when I partially melted it while heating the manifold bolts. It was not what I thought.
