Has anybody had this happen?
Has anybody had this happen?
After work, I went to my optometrist's office to pick up my new glasses. About
4 miles from where I work. I was in there about an hour and a half. Got in my
truck and it cranked, no start. tried it again, no start. Now, before I go any further,
I have a 2002 F150 Screw, and the fuel pump was replaced approx
13,000 miles ago with a new Ford part, not a reman one. Anyway, I called my
local Ford dealer and talked with the service advisor I always deal with and
told him to listen while I attempted to start it, and he said he could hear it
cranking but not starting. This was at 6pm. So, I called AAA and a flatbed
brought me and my truck to the dealer. He dropped the truck off on the service
lot and I left the keys on his desk with a note. The tow truck driver was good
enough to give me a ride home too. This was on a Monday.
Tuesday morning I called and talked to the service advisor. He said he walked
out to the truck and it fired right up with no problems. He said that is really
weird because he heard it just cranking and not starting. He said that he is
going to reproduce the miles I drove, the time I spent getting my glasses,
and see if the problem repeats. It didn't all day long, no problems.
When I called him before I left work, he asked if he could keep it another
day and put it through more tests. I said keep it and see if you find
anything.
The next day I called in the morning and he said there seems to be no problems.
The tech put a fuel pressure gauge on it and as soon as the
key was turned, the gauge showed full pressure, and fired right up. This
was all day on the second day. When I talked to him in the afternoon,
he said he couldn't understand it because he in fact heard it crank with
no start. They tried it all day. Always started.
So, After work I had a friend drive me to the Ford dealer to pick my truck
up. They had my truck for 2 days and all showed good. He said that he
is only going to charge me for an hour of labor, and said if it happens again,
what I paid will be applied to the new bill, no time limit.
I have been driving it for 2 weeks, and no problems.
When my fuel pump went out in Dec, 2007, it had the exact same symptoms.
Crank, no start. But right now my truck seems normal in all respects.
Now, I don't want to think that the fuel pump is going to fail on me all of
a sudden. and I don't want to think that I have another $800.00 bill
looming on the horizon.
I even thought that it might have been the PATS system not recognizing
my key.
Has anybody ever heard of this kind of thing happening?
I would really like to know. I love my truck and as all of us do, I depend on
it on a daily basis.
Sorry this was so long, but I felt I needed to explain the scenario.
Any thoughts?

No, it wasn't the starter, it cranked just fine. But that's all it did, crank.
no start. Just like it did when the fuel pump went out 13,000 miles
ago.
But it's been working fine ever since it started at the dealer and has been
fine so far.

I ended up with a nice tow bill when the shut down relay started to give out on my old Jeep.
I did a similar thing was not there when the tow truck picked it up. he drove it on the truck and off the truck. started just fine. irritating to say the least.
Might give it a shot.
