Replaced steering wheel and clock spring, now creaking/rubbing noise when sharp turn
Longest title ever, right? But yeah, I replaced the clock spring and steering wheel on my '02XL with parts from a junkyard, and now when I turn my wheel hard left, I get this creaking/rubbing sound from the steering wheel. It doesn't do it when I turn to the right. Didn't have this problem before I replaced the part. What have I done wrong?!
Thanks for the response, Tumba. But I literally just figured it out. The junked car I got it out of had the steering wheel locked in a turned position, and I didn't turn the clock spring back to compensate for that when I put it on my car, so it was turning further to the left than it was meant to. Kind of a PIA because I had to take the whole thing back off again, but at least it's fixed.
Just an FYI, have similar noise with 2001 F-150 in the steering wheel. Found out today from shop that my klunk noise and feel when driving is a slip joint (don't know the parts true name) in the steering linkage, just below the fire wall and before the pump. I guess the thing seezes up and is a bear to break free and or lube - won't slide into one another. Shop told me not many people know about this issue - poor design! Just reading and passing it along. Hope it helps.
