38's goin on today

Gettin my new 38's put on. Ive heard from ppl that regearin is a good thing to do and from others ive heard that its a waste and i shouldnt waste my money on it. Anybody got an opinion on this? If it aint necessary it would save me alot of money but i dont wana have to keep the throttle mashed to the floor for power. What should i do??

How hard is it to install the gears yourself?

If you have never done it before getting the backlash correct can be difficult. If you can have someone there who has done it successfully before to help then do that, otherwise I would suggest paying a shop to do it right.

Yeah, with those 38's you are going to NEED a regear. If you've never done a regear before then save your time and pay someone to do it right.

Regearing is only important if you like your transmission, so it's pretty important.

My 4.6 with 35" tire and 4.10 gears got around 17mpg and had good power...changed to 37" and went down to 4.56 gears and truetrac locker with the same mpgs and could cut donuts easily...I would go with 4.88 gears with 38" tires...AND DEFINITELY HAVE SOMEONE DO IT WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE DOING!

I'm running 37s and my truck hates me on stock gears. You will def need gears.

You absolutely have to regear, I drove on 38's for 2 weeks on the stock 3.55 gears and it was absolutely horrible. You couldn't get the truck out of it's own way if you tried. Go with 4.88's as well. There are members with 4.56 that aren't having any issues, but coming from someone who has 4.88, you can't go wrong with that size - makes the truck feel like stock again.

anywhere from $1000 - $1500. Parts + rebuild kits for the front/rear will run you ~$500 - $600, then factor in labor

Dang thats alot of money... ill have to wait a while to save up some more money if im gona do that. Im still in high school so i cant work many hours... Ive been drivin around today and i can tell theres some power loss but not a ridiculous amount. I wont have the money to regear for a pretty good while so i guess im stuck with the stock gears. How bad is this gona hurt my trans?

How much highway do you do? And how often do you hold it wide open? That should answer your question about your trans. It's not gonna like holding those high rpms.

Its an everyday driver. Never goes offroad unless im goin hunting or work in the field. I dont do the dramatic take off stuff. I try to keep my RPM's around 2000 or 2500 when takin off. Slow take off but i try to be easy on the truck.
