Mercon vs Mercon V

99 f150 5.4 4x4

Going to change my transfercas fluid this weekend.

I know the manual says Mercon, but from what I've read on a few other sites they no longer make mercon since the updated Mercon V.

I've read also that Mercon V states on the bottle "not to use in Transfercases".

I usually use Mobile1 stuff, so I'll probably stick with using some of their ATV stuff.

Anyone else read about the difference or why not to use Mercon V vs Mercon?

I might also put some Amsoil in there as that's what I'll more than likly use in my tranny in a couple of months.

Amsoil is the only way to go. It meets all the specs and you really won't find a better fluid.

I used Amsoil when I did my diffs and transfer case. Seems to be working out.

Amsoil is fine, but Mercon V is perfectly adequate in all applications which previously called for Mercon.

I guess it all depends if a T-bone steak tastes better at Ruth's Chris for $50 (ala carte!) or for $15 at Golden Corral.... Both are good-tasting steaks.

If I go with amsoil which one do I use? I've read they have a trick shift which is for mercon replacement or do I look for just fully synthetic atf? Jbrew can u post a link to the correct item number? Or PM if that better.

Thanks

The one in jbrew's picture is the correct one for your truck; tranny and transfer case. Here's the link.

Seriously?? I think anyone that's eaten at both will agree that the Ruth's steak is better by far, even at the cost. It's not wither one agree's or disagree's which steak taste better, that's probably not up for debate. It comes down to a person not minding paying for that (deserved) quality. Sure, save the money and go to Golden Corral...but it's an inferior steak and you're getting what you pay for.

My point is that, for all the praise heaped on the ultra-premium product with its ultra-premium price, the "everyday" stuff is perfectly adequate for any usage that a typical truck owner is going to experience.

If spending a LOT more money for a product that may be a little bit better than the "regular" stuff makes you happy, go ahead, it's your money to spend as you please.
