spider gears
spider gears
I removed my spider gears from the rear differential looking for a rear end noise. Turned out to be the parking brake.
Now I'm trying to get the spider gears back in.
The tension from the two axle shaft gears seems to keep the two spider gears from going in far enough to clear the carrier and won't allow them to rotate back into the carrier.
What's the best way to get the spider gears back in?

Okay, figured this out on my own.
The spring washers on the limited slip push the gears toward the middle of the carrier when the spiders are removed. Have to take it to the Ford dealership where they have a special tool to reinstall the spider gears.
Lesson learned, don't remove the spider gears unless absolutely necessary.

I think it was Colin Powell that said; Good judgment comes from experience, Experience comes from poor judgment.
You are on your way, glad you figured it out. The diff isn't where you want to start on learning about trucks, but what the heck check this link for future reference.http://www.angelfire.com/theforce/5o...5ohtech001.htm
