Rim/stud question

Hello all, today I went to check my rear brakes on my 97 F-150 2wd because they were sounding like they may needed new pads, the pads looked good just cleaned everything with a can of brake cleaner and the noise went away.

When I went to put the wheel back on I noticed that the lug nuts have no taper to them and the rims do not as well (stock steel rims). I noticed that there is a good amount of play and without the taper to center the rim up how is this accomplished? I tryed to get them as center as possible by hand as I torqued them down but this seems like it leaves room for play without the taper, mabey leading to wheel vibration? I just had new tires installed two days ago and I dont know if it was just me but it almost feels like there is some vibration now going down the highway that wasnt there before I checked the brakes today.

Is there a special way to put the wheels on? ive never had a vehicle that didn't have the tapered or shaft style lug nuts that centered the rim, any input would be much appreciated!

Your wheels are hub-centric rather than lug-centric...they align via the hubs rather than the studs.

I get it now that ive done some research, I will have to look again but I thought the play was in every direction as if the center hub was a little big and leaving room for play, ive seen the rings for AM wheels but these are stock. i'll check tomorrow and post what I find. Technically it should center them but could have sworn that the play was enough that they needed to be centered by hand. I understand that if the hub were to center them any play in the rotational direction would not matter but I was lifting the wheel to center the studs in the holes and I could have sworn it had some play in all directions..

Sounds like you have after market stel wheels. factory wheel use torque washers and are flat just like the wheels...
