Check Engine Light

Need 97 F150 to pass Calif smog test. Installed new EGR valve, truck runs real well after this. Engine light still on though. Cannot locate any vacuum leaks. WIll a lose fitting gas cap keep the check engine light on?

160,000, miles no leaks and uses no oil at all. original owner.

Geez, you been doing all that crap without even reading the fault codes? Take it to a shop where they know what they're doing!

AutoZone stores in California quit doing that service years ago.

Get it scanned and retrieve the DTC's. Post them here to receive help.

Compared to throwing random parts at the truck, an OBD code reader is a pretty cheap investment!

autozone does sell a cheap $40 scanner so does harbor freight. I been meaning to get one myself the only reason I havent is the truck has the gryphon that tells me codes but I need a scanner for all the other crap I end up fixing..

well you could try resetting the computer after you fixed that to see if it corrected the problem. It is proabably an O2 sensor. My check engine light has been on for about ten thousand miles.

O'Reilly's will check out an OBD II scanner to read codes. That would be the easiest way to find the codes and then everyone can help a lot easier.

I bought a cheap code reader on ebay ... best $30 I've ever spent. Not only has it helped me numerous times, but I've loaned it to prety much everyone I work w/ at one time or another (including the boss on several ocasions, which never hurts ).

The 2 I've had were for a gas cap, and a pcv/hose.

Yea, there isn't DTC's that direct you specifically to those components you mention. So that's not possible.

Fuel monitor DTC's can result from a problem with the PCV system. EVAP DTC's may direct you to a specific "area" within the system, but doesn't point to a specific component soley.

True, the PCV one gave me a bank 1 lean code, which could have been a ton of things. Pays to have a buddy at a Ford dealership.
