7700 series

This is my first post and it might be a dumb one to start with. I am looking at buying a 2001 F-150 7700 series and am wondering what the 7700 series is exactly? Thanks for any replies.

It's a Heavy/Super Duty F150. Better tranny, bigger radiator/tranny cooler, 7 lug wheels, lower gears, different springs/torsion bars. Good truck to have if you can find a clean one, that's for sure. Only downside I've heard about is extremely limited aftermarket wheel options with that 7 lug pattern.

7700 is the GVWR of the vehicle. Most F150s had a lower GVWR. The 7700 has a different suspension, axles etc to allow the higher GVWR. It does mean aftermarket wheels can be a problem to find as the axles are 7 lug, not 5 lug. This info is only for the 97-03 F150s. This changed to 8200lb with the 04. Also the first couple of years, they were called F250 LD.

If its 4wd it has different brakes, torsion bars, leaf springs, 10.25 rear axle. Beefier frame rails, better trans, larger radiator and trans cooler. Gear ratios are the same depending on configuration.

Correction, they do not have beefier frame rails. exact same thing unless they used a thicker steel for the frame.

As for the OP I highly recomend buying one if you can find one! I had a reg cab F-250 light duty (same thing as the 7700) the motor went unfortuantly. I loved the truck but it was worth fixing (rust) I couldnt find another one in my price range so I just built myself a new one. this time ext cab and could not be happier! great truck

Correction thicker steel is the same as saying its beefier. It has a stronger frame to support the added payload capacity. I use to work on them all the time...

I deal with steels all day at work. Thicker does mean stronger when the frames for these trucks are made out of hot rolled carbon steel.
