2001 F-150 Running issues!

hey all,

my wifes 01 Ford F-150 lariet 5.4 v8 is having issues.

if i dont get ---------- (dashes) across the odometer it will start up for 2-3 seconds then die. (starts up easy and right away)

if i get the numbers across the odo it will start up and soon as it dies it goes back to --------.

the anti theft light is blinking rapidly. i tried locking the doors, unlocking it with the key and trying both keys with no success.

we just had it in the shop not even a month ago it was dieing randomly but actaully stayed running once it died and you could go places. now its not staying running for more then 5 seconds.

the dealership about a month ago replaced the plugs, a #6 coil, fuel filter, new battery and cable ends. cost me a grand i got it back from the shop and it ran okay for a month.

it has now died and like stated above if you get numbers on the gauge it will start then die 4 seconds later. if you get --------- it wont start.

i have an auto start on it and when i start it with the autostart it does the same thing (will either crank, or start then die) so that kinda rules out the anti theft?? not sure just thinking.

anyone have any ideas?

Its your auto start malfunctioning. A co worker's bronco was having the same issues and he also has auto start. Replaced it and no more problem.

Remote start ? Yea, I've never heard of this one. Keep us (or me lol) posted if you don't mind. I'd like to see what it ends up being. I have a Remote as well, but not the digital read out.

Could be your starter Interrupt as well, maybe your remote is triggering it ? If you have an Interrupt in that model, I'd have to look @ Ford Service.

Well i dont think its the auto start. When i pull the fuel pump relay out the dash never wiggs out or dashes out. So im assuming at this point its either electrial down line from the relay, or the pump.

Replacing the pump tonight ill let you know if it fixes it. I did try swapping fuel pump relays and both click like crazy like they cant hold the contact closed. But when put back in another spot they work fine.

Hoping ts just some simple wiring issue after the fuel pump relay and i discover it soon as i dive into it

Ill keep you updated thanks for the replys

nope it didnt work changing the fuel pump

the fuel pump relay is still clicking not consistantly holding.

starts runs for a couple seconds sounds great, then blah. just dies.

the auto start has an on off button, i unplugged all the connectors from the brian of the autostart same issues no matter what i do there.

i checked all the fuses, pulled the fuse block made sure all the connections were good on the back side of both fuse boxes.

hm!!!

Bad ground and/or weak battery. Does the relay get hot ? Yes, or warm. Replace Relay.

No / Chase ground /Fuse block in dash. Check both green grounds behind drivers side kick Panel. Check fuse block tightness. They can short behind the the block if loose.

Make sure the inertia ground (passenger side kick panel) has a good connection. Look for short/corrosion, signs of a problem..

Also check all three Firewall Grounds.

With a simple wiring diagram , you can chase it down, - instead of guessing. Service Manual and Multi-Meter.

after checking several electrical connections, sensors, fuel pump and a few relays, i dove into the PCM to see if i could see any burnt connections.

took apart the pcm and didnt see any odviously bad electrical components. so i unplugged the super-chips chip off the pcm and waaalaa!! runs like a champ the superchip was causing all the problems.. i knew it was something electrical or computer like because of how intermittant it was. thanks for all the replys hopefuly this topic will save someone else some time in the future i could have just reached under the passanger dash and unplugged the super chip from the beginning, had i known it worked like that! live and learn! thanks for all the info im just glad i didnt have to pay the tow bill and the dealership diagnosis!

If you would have listed all mods, - most of us could of told you that right off. Sucks when your trying to help someone and they hold back. Anyway yea, you always start with your default tune (if you can) and when things get goofy like that. That can be for both electrical and engine problems since most everything ties to programming now. I didn't know you were running a different (modified) tune (chip), -had no idea.
