should i hear fuel pump
99 5.4, 145,000 Truck started losing power, and then would come back. limped it home, and after listening for fuel pump, i cannot hear it like other vehicles ive had.
Should i be able to hear it loud and clear?
Ive never put a fuel pump in this truck and ive had it since 50,000

Yes, you should hear it. Even just sitting in the drivers seat with the door open. About 1-2 second nice loud consistent buzz/whine when the key is turned to the on position. You can do a quick test and depress the shrader valve on the fuel rail, should give you a nice little squirt and a pssss.
When was the last time the filter was changed? Any check engine light at all, even flashing?
Any other symptoms or maintenance information/history would help like plugs, cop's, sensor cleaning.. or anything else that has gone bad lately.

installed new plugs and cops about 3-4 yrs ago. maybe 20,000 miles since then. (only drive this on weekends)
The truck does start right up and run, sometimes rough, sometimes smooth, just low on power.
Would like to check fuses (not sure where they are) as i found that my air intake had been resting on some wires and wore through them, right in front of fuse box/

Yea, I can't recall hearing my first pump. That went south @ 90,000 miles. The pump I'm running now I've always been able to hear. This one has close to 200,000 miles lol, but I have serviced it. The socks on the bottom get dirty and they're a PITA to clean.

Better off replacing, if you can find replacements.

Couldnt remember ever changing fuel filter, even though it looked pretty clean, so I pulled that off first to see if pump was working. Yep, squirting fuel, not very loud, and only for a second. pulled off filter, and cant blow throught it.. Installed new motorcraft filter and shes back running strong. still thinking about doing a pump though.
