Ya I was hoping that part wouldn't be bad, I'm worried about the axles..
This is just phase 1 of my massive suspension overhaul, I also need ball joints, torsion bars, leaf springs, air bags... Ugh, but it will be cheaper than buying a new truck.

 

yeah thats quite an overhaul...if you mean the cv axles there not bad with the right tools...and for the bearings i forgot you need the big 36mm nut taken off same with the cv axles

 

Yea, I always call em 4wd axles sorry. It is a lot of work, but the prospect of having a $400+ a month car payment with $5 a gallon gas coming soon... Didn't sound too appealing to me. So I will fix this truck up until I can finish my '79 cummins build.

 

Yeah thats the same way i am...id rather fix what i have and keep insurance low and have no payment vs. 400+ bucks a month....... and that is going to suck majorly if the gas gets that high

 

Yes it is, that's why I am keeping my truck and going to do a few things to try and improve mileage. And buy a lil sportbike this year to ride to work.. My work is like 8 miles each way, so I figure I can get a bike and keep the truck parked and save myself a ton of money.
Motorcycle = going to work and back two days in a row on 1 gallon of fuel...
Truck = getting to work and half way home on one gallon of fuel.

Why do you think the torsion bars and leaf springs are bad???

 

180k miles, plus towing.. And I am going to be towing a heavier trailer this year.
I know the leafs are bad, they are starting to seperate.. The torsion bars, I just don't like the fact that they are very rusty.

 

I have a 2002 F150 Supercrew 4x4. My grinding noise doesn't change during turns, however, I do get a pop sound when I leave from a stop. The grinding noise sounds like something rubbing against the body, and the sound gets faster as I speed up. What should I look at as the culprit of this sound. It was very faint when I bought the truck with 182,000 miles, and now its very loud and the vibration can be felt through the accelerator pedal with 202,000 miles on it.
