NEED HELP!!! Stumped on odd noise seems to be from rear...
The reason i was changing is it has 178,000 miles and i was getting a bad shudder when i would turn from a stand still and it has corrected the shudder but still have the noise....and I was listening closely tonight and i dont dont hink it does it in reverse only going forward does that make a diffrence?
Ideally the differential and trans fluids should have been changed every 30K miles. Even with synthetic (I run Amsoil in every vehicle I own) its good preventative maintenance to change fluids at that interval.
If your fluid was original then it was shot at least 100K miles ago; So you certainly have scoring and excessive wear on the ring and pinion assembly. My advice would be to run it with the new fluid until it explodes (which it may never do, but don't be surprised if it does), replace the assembly, put a good synthetic in (M-1, amsoil, redline etc) and change it every 30K. Good Luck.
Well it seems to be a common problem with this generation of the F-150. I had a 02 supercrew two wheel drive and loved it. Never had a problem with it. My father had the exact model I had only a year older which brings me to this forum. He is approaching 200k on his truck.
In two weeks he will be taking his annual fishing trip from Indianapolis to International Falls Minnesota. He does take his boat with him which is a 17foot or so bass boat. Just recently (2 days or so) I noticed a roaring coming from the rear of his vehicle. I suggested to him that it sounds like the rear end is starting to fail on him.
Sorry for such a long post but want to get all info in on this.
To my suprise, he has never changed the differential or tranny fluid. He has religously changed his oil every 3k with mobile1 synthetic.
My question is this. I realize that there is enough wear on the rear end to get it to start roaring. If I changed the fluid on the rear end with amisol or some other high end fluid, does this rear end have a fighting chance? That is of course with no finds of metal shavings or severe wear? I am getting ready to order his O2's and some suspension parts and concerned whether I should go ahead and order new parts for his diff or from your guys experience just change the fluid?

hey buddy i know exactly what it is.
i have this problem on my 97 f150 and i took it in to the mechanic
drove around with him for half an hour
he put it on the lift checked it out and said its the rear bearings
not an expensive fix but nothing that is going to harm your truck.
but for a college student its expensive enough haha

noise that seems to be coming from the rear....
Ok guys I am confused on what the noise like a moan or groaning or humming (hard to explain) noise that seems to be coming from the rear....it only does it when I am in motion....
Sounds like one of those 'FARTS while you walk'... those Farts you release while walking down the isle in a grocery store,
leaving it for the next unsuspecting shopper to stumble into and gag on.
