Does my 2001 have the bad spark plug problem?

I have a 2001 with the 5.4, are my plugs going to have the problem with them breaking while changing them out? or are these on certain years only? Thanks!

follow the recommended 28ft/lbs dry and you wont have an issue. Take your time with them. Make sure you re-install your cop's properly as far as using the dielectric grease, or misfires may soon follow.

Geez, I don't know how I misunderstood this. I've got an '02 F150 with the 5.4L and I thought ALL 5.4L Triton engines had the plug problem. Getting ready to do mine and just bought the Lisle plug removal tool off Amazon. That's what I get for rushing things. Grrrrr...

All the information is on this site already but 97 to mid 03 have 4 thread heads. Sometime in 03 they added more threads (8 in total if I remember correctly). Then they turned around and changed them again in 04 for the 3 valve engines. They can break off when you try to take them out. Same heads until sometime in 08. If you have brown COP boots in 08 you have the new improved design with no issues. That design is still in use as far as I know.

Unless you plan to buy an 04-08 model I would turn around and sell the Lisle Tool.

There is a decent "how to" for the plugs in the 97-03's on this site. Just substitute Toys recomendation of 28ft/lbs, don't use anti-seize and you will be good to go.

Thanks for the info Grizzstang. Yeah, I've been in kind of a rush getting things done on the truck for a 3 week vacation towing my travel trailer. My mistake on thinking I needed the Lisle tool. It's an easy return minus a restocking fee via the Amazon seller. I gotta lay off the beer when I'm ordering stuff online!

If you tow a travel trailer you are going to want to upgrade your tranny cooler sooner rather than later. The ones that came in our models are too small to do the job properly. You may not even have one if your truck came without the towing package.

Hmm, that's the first I've heard about that. Mine does have the towing package and the tranny cooler. Didn't realize it was undersized and I've been towing with this truck for 6 years now.

Have a look. You will see two coolers near the bottom of the rad behind the front bumper. They don't get great airflow by their placement either. The one on the passenger side is your tranny cooler. The other one is your power steering cooler.
